Clint Sovie finished taking his final exams at Navy on Dec. 15, and that should've given the senior linebacker some free time to focus on football and the Midshipmen's upcoming trip to the Texas Bowl. Instead, Sovie has been busy putting his life in order as he prepares to leave the academy. He moved out of Bancroft Hall, the enormous dormitory where he lived for much of the past 4 1/2 years. He helped his fiancee, who is heading to flight school in early January, pack up her apartment.

Perhaps more than any other player on the Navy football team, senior slotback Darius Staten is thrilled that the Midshipmen will be playing in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, which is about 35 miles from his hometown of Carrollton, Texas. “I'm emotional right now,” Staten said after the team's 42-14 throttling of South Alabama on Saturday night. “It's going to be amazing. You wouldn't want to end your career any way better than to end it where you started.

College football Navy will play against Missouri in Texas Bowl on Dec. 31 Missouri announced Sunday that its football team will play Navy in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 31 in Houston. The Texas Bowl had the final selection of teams from the Big 12, and once the Insight Bowl passed over Missouri (8-4) for Iowa State (6-6), despite the fact that the Tigers have a better record and defeated the Cyclones, 34-24, on Nov. 21, the faceoff with Navy (8-4) at Reliant Stadium was set. "Missouri is a great football team, and they will provide a tremendous challenge for us," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said.

While preparing his team for last Saturday's game against Duke, Navy football coach Ken Niumatalolo repeatedly spoke of the hazards of prosperity. The Midshipmen had won three in a row (including a thumping of Notre Dame on national television), received votes in the Associated Press Top 25 and were feeling indomitable with the Blue Devils coming to Annapolis for what looked to be a homecoming romp. So Niumatalolo warned his players about the perils of treating Duke as a gimme. The Blue Devils might have dropped six consecutive games, but overlooking a team with little at stake other than personal accountability could spell disaster.

The attention paid to Navy's triple-option offense rarely reaches beyond one player, that being Ricky Dobbs. Forget about an equitable distribution of recognition, at least outside the locker room. That's just how it goes after the senior set an NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns in a season by a quarterback and steered Navy to 10 wins and an authoritative victory in the Texas Bowl. Yet ask Dobbs about those accomplishments, and he immediately redirects credit to the group responsible for keeping him out of harm's way: the offensive line.

HOUSTON -- The contrast between the players from Navy and Missouri was noticeable throughout the week, as they went through the various activities that led up to the Texas Bowl. The Tigers dwarfed their Midshipmen counterparts - Missouri's 6-foot-5, 240-pound quarterback was bigger than nearly all of Navy's defensive players. But when it came time to play the game Thursday at Reliant Stadium, that didn't matter. The Midshipmen executed better on both sides of the ball, and their star player, junior quarterback Ricky Dobbs, had a sensational performance.
