Maryland football might be interested in former coaches Terry Bowden and Bobby Ross, but neither appears interested in Maryland. Yesterday, Bowden said he's happy with his job as an ABC-TV football analyst. Ross' agent, Jack Reale, said the former Maryland coach is equally content with what he's found in two weeks of retirement after resigning as coach of the Detroit Lions. "It's a natural question that arises," Reale said. "But Bob had an outstanding job with the Lions, and he made a decision to spend more time with his family."

It isn't that much of a stretch when talking about the Bowdens to refer to them as the First Family of college football. Bobby Bowden, the head coach at Florida State for the last 29 years, is the NCAA's all-time leader in victories with 347, and is one of the sport's most refreshing, outgoing and interesting characters. Tommy Bowden, the head coach at Clemson, is one of Bobby Bowden's four sons, and he has gone 40-28 with the Tigers over the past six seasons. Terry Bowden, another one of Bobby Bowden's sons, was 47-16-1 as the coach at Auburn before leaving the school in 1998.

Terry Bowden spoke with his father, Bobby, twice last week: once after faxing him the game plan two days before Auburn was to play then-top-ranked Florida in Gainesville and again on Saturday.During halftime of his team's 36-33 upset win, the younger Bowden telephoned the family's home in Tallahassee. Bobby Bowden, whose Florida State team was off last week, had watched the Tigers take a 22-14 lead."I called him from the locker room," the younger Bowden recalled yesterday, "and he told me to keep doing what we were doing."

TEMPE, Ariz. -- They are gathered here, more than 30 family members, hunkered down in a string of rooms and suites at a nearby resort in Scottsdale. When it comes to visiting with the grandparents, the Bowdens do it in style. Of course, they wouldn't be here, soaking up the Arizona sun, if it were not for second-ranked Florida State being invited to play top-ranked Tennessee in Monday night's Fiesta Bowl. And most of them wouldn't be here, literally speaking, if it were not for Ann and Bobby Bowden.

COLLEGE PARK -- When Mark Duffner is fired -- and yes, his future is that inevitable -- he can point to Oct. 5 as the day that ruined his career at Maryland.Oct. 5 was the day the Terps lost at home to North Carolina State, 34-8. The day their fans and alumni lost hope in this likable, enthusiastic, overmatched coach.Former athletic director Andy Geiger gave the newcomer from Division I-AA Holy Cross five years to revive the program, and it hasn't happened. At least not to the extent Duffner needs to save his job.His record at Maryland is 19-34 entering Thursday night's ESPN game against Georgia Tech at Byrd Stadium.

Minnesota became the first team in NCAA history to have two 1,000-yard rushers in three consecutive seasons when Gary Russell (1,045) joined Laurence Maroney (1,355).
