Ten Minutes Older is the kind of creative, offbeat production that makes cable so much more exciting and rewarding to watch than network television these days. The concept: Showtime asked seven of international cinema's best directors to each make a 10-minute film on the subject of time. The deal: They would have total creative freedom to express their vision. The seven: Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, Chen Kaige, Aki Kaurismaki and Victor Erice. The result is an uneven but always interesting and occasionally dazzling series of 10-minute films.

I made a side dish of sauteed brussels sprouts that were blanched and halved before being sauteed. They were good, but they didn't brown nicely like in the picture that accompanied the recipe. What went wrong? I'm guessing that your saute pan was too small for the quantity of sprouts you were cooking. That nice, crisp sear can be achieved only if the food in question enjoys prolonged contact with a hot pan. Ideally, the pan would be wide enough to accommodate the sprouts in one layer, and, instead of continually prodding and stirring, you'd leave them alone for a few minutes so that each would brown.

Editor's note: One industrious and inventive boy plants the seeds of a new civilization. "Of course he's miserable," moaned Wesley's mother. "He sticks out." "Like a nose," snapped his father. Listening through the heating vent, Wesley knew they were right. He was an outcast from the civilization around him. He alone in his town disliked pizza and soda, alarming his mother and the school nurse. He found professional football stupid. He'd refused to shave half his head, the hairstyle worn by all the other boys, despite his father's bribe of five dollars.

It's 4:30 a.m., still pitch-dark in Manhattan, when Robin Roberts leaves her 27th floor apartment to go to work at Good Morning America. It takes two alarm clocks and several swipes at the snooze button to start her day. About half an hour later, casually dressed, she carries the day's wardrobe and a folder of research material ("my homework") delivered by courier the night before. Outside her building, she slips into the back seat of a black Lincoln Town Car for the five-minute ride to ABC's Times Square studio.

Inexpensive Orzo is a simple pasta, made from wheat flour, that can be used in many recipies. Orzo is found in many Greek dishes, including lamb or tomato stuffing recipies. Greeks also serve orzo in place of rice, serving it with butter and Parmesan cheese. At first glance, orzo is hardly distinguishable from long grain rice and is prepared in a similar manner. In this recipe the orzo is first toasted in butter, giving it a nutty flavor. The soup mix, combined with garlic and mushrooms, creates a savory flavor that's perfect to serve as a side dish instead of rice.

Making stuffed cabbage rolls is generally done on weekends, when more time is available. They not only can take from one to 1 1/2 hours to cook, but preparing the leaves can be time-consuming, difficult and frustrating. But, there is an easier and faster way.First, boil some water. Let a head of cabbage rest in it for about 10 minutes, so that the leaves become limp and thus easy to remove without tearing. They also become pliable enough to be rolled around meat without breaking or cracking.
