Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who has been remarkably elusive this spring camp, emerged from the indoor batting cages at the Ed Smith Stadium complex on Tuesday afternoon. Roberts, who had just taken swings off a tee from both sides of the plate for about 15 minutes, declined to speak with the media until Friday but did say he has been swinging off a tee, playing catch and doing some light lifting. “Progression,” Roberts said with a slight smile. Roberts, who has been limited to 98 games over the past two years with concussion symptoms, has yet to take live batting practice or field ground balls.

As Orioles position players continue to trickle in ahead of the club's first full workout Friday, one player has been noticeably absent from the team's clubhouse. And given the concussion symptoms that have limited second baseman Brian Roberts to 98 games the past two seasons, he is one of the biggest question marks in camp. On Tuesday, the switch-hitting Roberts was spotted hitting balls from a tee for about 15 minutes in the team's indoor batting cages at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.

They're half a world away, but the enthusiasm greeting the start of the LPGA's 63rd season appears as high as any time in recent memory. The season opener comes Thursday at the Women's Australian Open, one of five new events for 2012 — though "new" might be a relative term. Four of the five, including Australia, are a return to old territory that went without the LPGA for a while. Also back on the schedule: Hawaii, Toledo and Kingsmill Resort in Virginia. "We have loyal fan bases in these places that we've been," player Morgan Pressel said.

What started at an accounting firm 10 years ago as a way to raise money for a co-worker whose son was ill has transitioned into an annual event focused on local charities. Each spring employees of the Baltimore office of the Reznick Group host a fundraising golf tournament and carefully select one local nonprofit as the beneficiary. Proceeds from this year's tournament, set for Tuesday at the Woodlands Golf Course in Windsor Mill, will go to the Maryland Coalition for Inclusive Education Inc. (MCIE)

It was only three weeks ago that we last saw Steve Stricker, as a bout with laryngitis left him trying to speak as little as possible at the Shark Shootout in Naples, Fla. Stricker has his voice back, thankfully. And his swing sure didn't seem under the weather as he and teammate Jerry Kelly finished two strokes shy of a back-to-back triumph in the partnership event. Even so, the winner of nine PGA Tour trophies admits a certain apprehension every January. "You're not sure what this new year is going to bring," Stricker told reporters at this week's Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
