Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who has been remarkably elusive this spring camp, emerged from the indoor batting cages at the Ed Smith Stadium complex on Tuesday afternoon. Roberts, who had just taken swings off a tee from both sides of the plate for about 15 minutes, declined to speak with the media until Friday but did say he has been swinging off a tee, playing catch and doing some light lifting. “Progression,” Roberts said with a slight smile. Roberts, who has been limited to 98 games over the past two years with concussion symptoms, has yet to take live batting practice or field ground balls.

Only a half-dozen older colts and geldings passed the entry box for the 1 1/4 -mile, $75,000 event. Included in the field are the first three finishers of the Hail Emperor Stakes - Ewer All Wet, Sly Joe and Perfect to a Tee. Ewer All Wet was coming off a wire-to-wire romp in the Mountaineer Mile Handicap when eking out a nose victory in the Hail Emperor.

R.W. Eaks had more trouble getting to the first tee than he did with the Wakefield Valley Golf Club course in Westminster yesterday. Eaks shot 5-under-par 32-35-67, and claimed one of two available places in this week's Constellation Energy Champions Tour event at Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley. Mark Johnson, who birdied four of the first five holes, earned the other one during a qualifying round with a win on the first playoff hole, after he and Donald Reese had tied at 69. Eaks, already the first alternate without playing, decided to play with the hope of getting one of the spots without waiting on standby.
