For Lewis, final assist earns passing grade Sport basketball GIRLS Tiffany Lewis, a 5-foot-9 senior point guard, closed out a fine four-year career with 1,036 points and 693 assists for Southside, which reached the Class 1A state title game. On Friday, she was named the Most Valuable Player in the Baltimore City-County All-Star Game at Woodlawn after leading City to a 72-50 win. This season, Lewis - a team captain - averaged 13.5 points and seven assists as the No. 8 Jaguars finished with a 22-3record.

SPORT LACROSSE Nick Elsmo, Severn BOYS STATS -- One of the premier midfielders in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference, Elsmo led the Admirals (14-10) in scoring with 45 goals and 32 assists in 24 games. In addition to scoring, the junior also can scoop up ground balls and win faceoffs. SIDELINES -- Elsmo was a team captain in football, basketball and lacrosse. In the fall, Elsmo, 6-feet and 190 pounds, was a running back, linebacker and punter for the football team, and he was a guard on the basketball team in the winter.

Jason Abbott of Walkersville won the grand prize of a $4,000 college scholarship at last night's 38th annual Scholar Athlete Awards dinner that honored 89 football players at Martin's West. A total of $10,000 in scholarships was awarded by the Baltimore chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame that sponsors the event, the largest of more than 100 similar dinners throughout the country. Abbott was one of six regional scholarship award winners that included Michael Miller of Aberdeen, Dominique Williams of Patterson, Clifton Lennon of Loyola, Greg Lotz of Gilman and Ryan Fisher of Mount St. Joseph.

Milton Wright's field hockey team usually had just one strategy -- keep the ball away from Julie Jakum.If the senior midfielder got to the ball, opposing coaches knew she could make things happen. The Baltimore Sun's Harford County Player of the Year in field hockey was the catalyst for the Mustangs' attack and a stalwart on defense."Julie really knows the game," said Mustangs coach Maria Wehage. "She knows the mental part, the thinking part which other people on her same grade level haven't developed yet. She understands how to force things to happen for her."

The boys Player of the Year Ryan Ford, Liberty: When Lions coach Ed DeVincent perused possible matchups between his squad and an opponent, he always established who was the biggest scoring threat and assigned Ford to mark him. That strategy rarely backfired, as the senior back polished his reputation as one of the toughest defenders in the state. A tenacious player who had the speed to match up with any opposing forward, Ford allowed only one opponent to score against him in two seasons.

Navy's men's cross country team lost to 10th-ranked Tennessee, 27-51, but defeated Miami, 51-72, and Indiana, 51-88, in a four-team dual meet last week in Knoxville, Tenn.The Mids were led by junior captain Greg Keller, who finished second overall in 25 minutes, 53 seconds. Senior Ramon Marin was fifth overall with a 26:18 clocking. OtherNavy finishers included sophomore Bruce Fram, 12th in 26:45; junior Luis Molina, 18th in 27:09; junior Jon Taylor, 21st in 27:17; sophomore Jeff Leuenberger, 25th in 27:38; and senior Peter Lundblad, 29th in 27:55.
