North Carolina (2-10, 1-7 ACC) Strengths: Senior quarterback Darian Durant isn't big (5 feet 11, 210 pounds), but he's a gutsy playmaker who has 51 touchdown passes in three seasons. The Tar Heels ask him to do a lot of things, but when he throws the ball, it's usually to wide receiver Jarwarski Pollock, who had 71 catches last year. Kick returner Mike Mason is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Weaknesses: Why sugarcoat it? North Carolina's defense was atrocious last season.

Wake Forest (5-7, 3-5 ACC) Strengths: Junior running back Chris Barclay is the real deal. He rushed for 1,192 yards last season, which was the second most in school history, and ran for 243 yards and three touchdowns against Maryland during a 41-28 loss. With its misdirection offense, Wake Forest will be able to get Barclay the ball in a variety of ways. Weaknesses: The Demon Deacons return eight starters on defense, but they're not particularly athletic. On offense, center Blake Lingruen is one of the best linemen in the conference, but the rest of the players up front are very inexperienced.

Virginia (8-5, 4-4 ACC) Strengths: Virginia has three returning starters at linebacker and is touting all three as Butkus Award candidates. The best of the trio is sophomore Ahmad Brooks, who flies to the football and hits ferociously. All four defensive linemen return, and the Cavaliers are touting their front seven as the best in the nation. Running backs Alvin Pearman and Wali Lundy should lead one of the ACC's best ground attacks. Seventeen total starters return. Weaknesses: The Cavaliers have to replace quarterback Matt Schaub, who went to the NFL. Virginia also needs to prove it can stop someone when it matters.

Georgia Tech (7-6, 4-4 ACC) Strengths: The Yellow Jackets have 14 starters returning and have a talented sophomore quarterback in Reggie Ball, but the team's real strength is the running game. P.J. Daniels led the conference in rushing last year with 1,447 yards and wore opponents out with his bruising style. Daniels, a former walk-on, ran for 307 yards and four touchdowns in a rout of Tulsa in the Humanitarian Bowl. Weaknesses: Georgia Tech is talented, but the squad might be a year away from challenging for the title.
