THOMAS D. MICHAEL, M.D., of Broad Run Farm, Woodsboro, MD, died December 22, 2005 at home after a brief illness. He practiced medicine in Frederick for thirty years and retired in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Michael; five children: Christopher S. Michael, Stacey Michael-Di Franza, Tara Michael Andrews, Garth N. Michael, R. Steele Michael; and six grandchildren. Services are private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.

Linda Maglio's eyes didn't blink. Her 16-year-old daughter and promising gymnast, Tara, was about to begin her floor exercise and missing a single flip was unacceptable. "I can't breathe," she nervously admitted, as her right leg and hand shook. More than 1,300 girls from several states came to the Baltimore Convention Center this weekend to compete in the 18th annual Christmas on the Chesapeake gymnastics meet. The competition that ended yesterday was sponsored in part by Docksiders Gymnastics in Millersville.

Howard County Capt. Tara D. Nelson's police powers were restored yesterday, putting her back in charge of the department's criminal investigations after a monthlong inquiry into a domestic dispute with her husband. Late last week, Baltimore County prosecutors dropped six assault charges against Nelson after her husband, Larry Nelson, refused to testify in the case. Larry Nelson had accused his wife of trying to run him and a friend over with her Lexus and destroying his motorcycle in the mid-October incident.

People who have worked with suspended Howard County Police Capt. Tara D. Nelson over her 20 years in the department describe her as a crisp, professional but approachable leader. She would buy Christmas gifts for her staff, they say, and ask -- rather than order -- them to take assignments. Yesterday, some of those colleagues expressed shock and sadness that a weekend domestic dispute with her husband, whom she suspected of cheating, could topple a groundbreaking career that took her to the top of the Criminal Investigations Bureau.
