Being a new vampire ain't easy. And Tara's learning the hard way. Escaping from Sookie's into the woods, Tara experiences vampire sensory overload - her vision is heightened, she can hear things very clearly. She can see the entire universe and stars above her, but can also see a creepy opossum in a tree. She can also see a stranded motorist looking for help. She bears her fangs and approaches.  "Listen ... I ... have no problem with vampires," the woman begs. Tara's not having it. She's hungry and pissed, so we grabs her neck and is about to sink her teeth in until she sees her reflection in the car window and backs away.  "I'm sorry," Tara says and backs off. Apparently, if you were a good person and had a soul before you turned vampire, that carries over into your new vampire conscience.  Or something.

BOSTON -- I've just finished a book that you can't read. I'm not bragging about my literary prowess. The book wasn't "Finnegan's Wake" in the original Joyce or "The Odyssey" in ancient Greek. The problem isn't a language barrier but a legal barrier. A judge in Atlanta has stopped publication of Alice Randall's "The Wind Done Gone" on the grounds that it violates the copyright of the book that it mocks: "Gone With the Wind." Her new novel can't be sold in bookstores, it can't be sold on eBay; indeed, the publisher has actually been asked to round up advance reading copies like the one in my hands.

Just how many subplots swirled about in tonight's season premiere? I think I lost count at 32. While it's always good to meet new characters (like Vampire Authority rep Nora, who gives off a distinct Rachel Weisz vibe) and see others get extended time (always good to see Pam!), the Bon Temps community is getting a bit crowded -- and a bit hard to follow. You're not sure what you're supposed to care about most: Sookie, who used to be the main character and is now often shifted to the background?

Marnie, er, Antonia is in full-on attack mode. High-yo, silver, away! "The sun" -- Jessica Call Bill what you will: A boorish politican, heartless-on-the-surface ruler, gold card member of Jos. A Bank. But he had a seemingly good plan to combat Marnie/Antonia's plot against all of vampire kind. And he did it fairly quickly. American Congress -- take note. MY ANTONIA: Basically, the whole Marnie as Antonia's rise to power and fast plan to wreak vengeance against vampires was the best part of this slow episode.

Lime Kiln Middle School seventh-grader Michelle Wong cannot talk with the animals, but she can imagine what they might say, and she figures few would have kind words about last year's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. She recently wrote a short play about a few sea creatures affected by the spill that was submitted in the Arena Stage 12th Annual Student 10-Minute Play Competition. With more than 800 entries submitted from area middle and high schools, Michelle didn't figure she had much of a chance at winning.

The family comedy has undergone some transformations of late, thanks mostly to cable television and its restless search for buttons and/or envelopes to push. United States of Tara, a new Showtime series about a woman with four personalities (including her "own"), is solidly within this new tradition, alongside shows like Weeds, The Riches and Big Love - stories of families whose unusual lives or lifestyles set them apart from the supposedly normal world, which we are typically invited to see as grotesque.

The Baltimore state's attorney's office dropped prostitution charges Monday against two sisters believed to have been trafficked into the country from Mexico, prosecutors said, because city police failed to produce the evidence against them. Assistant State's Attorney Joakim Tan said that investigators supplied him with charging documents, the results of criminal background checks on the women and the warrant authorizing the Sept. 25 search of a two-story Butchers Hill rowhouse in the 200 block of S. Collington Ave. But when Tan asked for the evidence seized during the search - a ledger police had said showed that the suspects each had 19 customers on the day of their arrest along with money, business cards and 20 photographs - one of the detectives said there were "problems" locating it, Tan said.
