Led by a 23-save performance by freshman Kieran Burke, the No. 3 North Carolina men's lacrosse team beat No. 15 host Virginia, 10-7, Saturday. The Tar Heels (8-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) were outshot 51-32 by the Cavaliers (5-6, 0-2), but Burke made the most school saves since Paul Spellman had 25 in a 10-6 win over Maryland on March 22, 2003. - For most of Saturday's women's lacrosse showdown between No. 1 Maryland and No. 2 North Carolina, the Tar Heels managed to keep Maryland from generating their trademark run. In a game that was tied eight times, the Tar Heels slowed the pace early with their deliberate offense, but when the Terps get rolling, they can put up goals in hurry. A four-goal spurt early in the second half provided the momentum behind Maryland's 14-13 victory in the clash of Atlantic Coast Conference rivals.

The stakes could not be much higher for Saturday's noon showdown between the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team and No. 2 North Carolina in College Park. Not only is the No. 1 ranking at stake, but the winner likely will be the top seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, which begins April 25. While the Tar Heels already have the home-field advantage for that - the tournament is in Chapel Hill - the top seed certainly brings a psychological edge. The Terps head into Saturday with the No. 2 scoring offense in Division I, averaging 16 goals per game.

The Tar Heels led by as many as three goals, but Johns Hopkins (6-3) kept it close with a 48-37 shot advantage and 13-11 faceoff advantage.

Prior to Saturday, No. 10 North Carolina had yet to string together two consecutive wins in 2013 and was just one game above .500 heading into a pivotal road contest against top-ranked and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland. But that didn't prevent the Tar Heels from pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the season as they tagged the Terps with their first loss of the year in a 10-8 victory at Byrd Stadium in College Park. Maryland (6-1) may have been the team with all of the accolades and the momentum, but it also had all of the pressure, according to North Carolina senior attackman Marcus Holman.

Maryland owns a 39-22 advantage in this series with its Atlantic Coast Conference rival, but North Carolina has won four of the last six meetings. The No. 10 Tar Heels are 4-3 this spring but have followed every win with a loss. They dusted Dartmouth, 13-5, on Monday as senior attackman Marcus Holman (Gilman) registered four goals (including the 100th of his career) and one assist. The top-ranked Terps, who are the only undefeated team left in Division I, are seeking their first 7-0 start since 2004.

And then there were none. No. 1 Maryland's bid for a perfect season ended emphatically against No. 10 North Carolina, 10-8, before an announced 3,053 at Byrd Stadium on Saturday. The Terps , who fell to 6-1 and 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, had been the last remaining unbeaten men's lacrosse team in Division I after No. 2 Cornell lost, 9-8, to No. 20 Bucknell last Tuesday. But the Tar Heels (5-3, 1-1) prevented Maryland from its first 7-0 start since 2004. "It's pretty disappointing," Terps senior midfielder Jake Bernhardt said.

Friday's editions included a Q&A with North Carolina senior attackman Marcus Holman, a Baltimore native and Gilman graduate. Due to space constraints, here are some more answers that didn't make the cut: Who is the best teammate you've played with? I would have to say that [senior midfielder] Davey Emala is a great teammate. He's a guy that just likes to take care of business. He comes to work every day. I would also have to say that [sophomore attackman] Joey Sankey - in the two years that I've played with him - is another guy that you can always count on to make the right play and you can always count on him going 100 percent.
