Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 30-year-old West Baltimore man who was found unconscious in a police wagon after officers arrested him Saturday, a police spokeswoman said yesterday.Jesse Chapman, of the 1300 block of N. Fulton Ave., was pronounced dead at 11:57 p.m. Saturday after officers found him unconscious in the back of the police wagon, said Officer Sabrina Tapp-Harper, the spokeswoman.The officers had arrested Mr. Chapman after a brief struggle in the 1100 block of N. Fulton Ave., where they had chased him from the Western District station house a block away, Officer Tapp-Harper said.

Several Baltimore police officers have been placed on administrative duty while homicide detectives investigate yesterday's death of a 32-year-old Baltimore man officers had just handcuffed in the emergency room of Johns Hopkins Hospital.Baltimore police spokeswoman Officer Sabrina V. Tapp-Harper said Cordell Dwayne Bruce of the 1200 block of Wicklow Road ran into the Hopkins emergency room about 4 a.m. carrying a hypodermic syringe. The man began "acting strangely," she said, wandering into restricted areas and "harassing" medical personnel.

Where can I get details?There is indeed such a re-enactment scheduled May 18-19 at a private, 300-acre farm near Orange, Va., about 15 miles south of the original 1864 Wilderness battle sites. The event is being arranged by RAR Communications, a Virginia-based marketing firm.Up to 7,000 people from Civil War organizations throughout the United States are expected to participate in the event, in which the battles of Saunder's Field and Widow Tapp's Farm will be re-enacted.

A man who Baltimore police said tried to beat an officer with a nightstick was in critical condition after the officer shot him yesterday afternoon at Bon Secours Hospital.Melvin Calwell, 22, who has been in police custody since Friday, came out of the bathroom of his hospital room about 3:45 p.m., grabbed the officer's nightstick and struck him with it, according to police accounts."He hit the officer on the knuckles," said Officer Sabrina V. Tapp-Harper, a police spokeswoman. "And then he tried to hit him several more times."

City police arrested a Northeast Baltimore man yesterday and charged him in the death of a 25-year-old man whose dismembered body was found in Leakin Park on May 4.Robert McLain, 27, of the 2400 block of Bridgehampton Drive was charged with first-degree murder and a weapons violation, said Officer Sabrina Tapp-Harper, a police spokeswoman.Mr. McLain was a friend of the victim, Gregory Melvin Smith, whose last known address was the same as Mr. McLain's, Officer Tapp-Harper said.The two had lived together for a month but had been friends for nine years, she said.

What began last night as a routine traffic stop ended with a Northwestern District police officer shot in each hand, police reported.Just before 7 p.m., Officer Kevin Baskette, a seven-year veteran, stopped a car with expired tags in the 4300 block of Park Heights Ave., said Officer Sabrina Tapp-Harper, a police spokeswoman.A passenger in the car got out and ran, and Officer Baskette chased him, the spokeswoman said. During the chase, the man turned and fired a silver-colored handgun at Officer Baskette, she said.

In an assault that shocked area residents, a 13-year-old girl was raped by 10 teen-age boys after she was abducted outside an East Baltimore store Thursday night, police said.The girl was raped for several hours in the basement of a two-family house in the 1200 block of N. Eden St. until one of the building's residents found her, said Officer Sabrina V. Tapp-Harper, a department spokeswoman."I was really shocked for it to happen in this neighborhood," said Constance Crum, 57, who lives across the street from the building where the rape occurred.

Preston St. shot and killed a man who had assaulted a woman moments earlier, police said.An autopsy was to be held today to recover the bullet or bullets in order to determine which of the officers' guns fired the fatal rounds.The name of the dead man was withheld pending notification of relatives.The two uniformed Eastern District officers who arrived at the house were not injured and each was assigned to temporary administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation.

A retired Baltimore police lieutenant working in Mount Vernon yesterday shot and killed a man who apparently threatened him with a sharp object during a robbery attempt, police said.The shooting occurred about 11:30 a.m. in the 900 block ofLovegrove St., an alley between St. Paul and Charles streets, near the back of a parking lot.People walking along Charles Street in the neighborhood of antique shops, restaurants and upscale apartments had a clear view of the crime scene and the victim's body, sprawled face down across the alley.

Because of a typesetting error, an article in some editions of The Sun yesterday provided incomplete information about Mass Transit Administration workers who were involved in the theft of an estimated $500,000 in bus fares. Milton Tapp, 58, pleaded guilty on April 28 to one count of felony theft. Betty McKnight, 28, was found guilty of theft conspiracy. Tapp and McKnight face a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.A Baltimore Circuit Court jury yesterday convicted two Mass Transit Administration employees who were involved in the theft of an estimated $500,000 from bus fare boxes.
