Peter Angelos denied yesterday that he is actively pursuing a third NFL team, although he said he is open to the idea if he is unsuccessful in luring the Los Angeles Rams or Tampa Bay Buccaneers to town.Denying a report on Channel 11 news Tuesday night, Angelos said he thinks more teams may become available but said he has had no contact with them and declined to specify which team or teams would go on the sales block."I just have a sense," Angelos said.Angelos has spoken with Rams officials several times in recent months and has offered to purchase a minority stake in the team if it moves to Baltimore.

I was watching an ESPN Classic program on former heavyweight champion George Foreman over the weekend, and it included his 1973 demolition of Joe Frazier in Jamaica. Sitting at ringside, Howard Cosell bellowed, "He's a big, strong boy." Not quite as bad as "Look at that little monkey run," but I cringed nonetheless. Today, a comment like that would get Steve Lyons fired. Three certainties in life: death, taxes, and a television camera focusing on the head coach immediately after his kicker misses a field goal.

NEW YORK -- Bill Belichick will be back in Cleveland tonight, according to two NFL sources. That makes it unlikely he'll be named head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but quite possible he'll be named the new head coach of the Browns tomorrow or Wednesday. The New York Giants' 38-year-old defensive coordinator -- who interviewed at Tampa and Cleveland last week -- will meet again with Browns owner Art Modell tonight at Modell's home. It is believed that if they can finalize terms of a contract and the amount of control Belichick will be given, he will succeed the fired Bud Carson and interim Jim Shofner as the Browns' coach.

The Colts were struggling. Everyone in Memorial Stadium knew it, from the juiced-up Oakland Raiders to the hushed crowd of 56,368 who'd come to watch the first-ever AFC title game in 1971. Nursing a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter, the Colts seemed stuck on offense. Then, on third-and-11 from his own 32, quarterback Johnny Unitas fired a sideline pass to Ray Perkins, a back-up receiver who'd broken loose past midfield. Perkins caught the ball and made for the end zone, eluding a desperate flying tackle at the 5-yard line to score.

Yesterday, The Seattle Times published a blistering collection of stories critical of the University of Washington football program run by former Ravens offensive assistant Rick Neuheisel, who is the new head coach at UCLA. While Washington had a tremendous season in 2000 under Neuheisel, the articles paint an alarming picture of star players routinely running afoul of the law and Neuheisel and athletic department officials doing far too little to rein in the players.

Gov. William Donald Schaefer said yesterday that he believed the NFL's opposition to a move of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Baltimore reduces the chances of the team coming here, an eventuality the governor gives odds of "less than 50-50."Schaefer, in a meeting with executives of The Sun, called Peter Angelos' $200 million offer for the team "outrageous" and called the Orioles owner "an amazing man."However, he said of the Bucs moving to Baltimore, "I think it's doubtful. I think it's less than 50-50."
