Rabbi Jerome Yaakov Markowitz, whose career as a Hebrew school teacher spanned more than four decades, died of heart failure Feb. 28 at his Northwest Baltimore home. He was 77. Rabbi Markowitz was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and moved to Baltimore with his family in 1935. He attended City College and the Talmudical Academy of Baltimore. In 1950, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore, and was ordained as a rabbi after graduating from Ner Israel Rabbinical College.

Gibbons rallies to defeat Calvert Hall, 68-61No. 10 Cardinal Gibbons picked the right time to get hot yesterday.Cardinal Gibbons, sparked by Steve Wojciechowski and Troy Queen, hit seven of 10 from the field and 12 of 16 from the line in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 68-61 victory over visiting and No. 11 Calvert Hall in a Catholic League and Maryland Scholastic Association Armstrong Conference A League game.Calvert Hall led 47-42 after three quarters and appeared in control. The Crusaders, however, made some adjustments for the final eight minutes.

When Dr. Aaron and Roz Goldberg were looking over the Jewish schools in northwest Baltimore two years ago, they wanted one that would pass along their values to their children. But what they found were schools at different ends of their religious spectrum.The Goldbergs, who are Orthodox, worried that their children would stand out from the majority of students in the non-Orthodox Jewish schools. They feared awkward moments over invitations to Saturday birthday parties, for example, from Jewish families who do not observe the Sabbath.

Baltimore resident Tamir Goodman of Takoma Academy, who recently accepted a full basketball scholarship to Towson University, suffered an ankle injury Tuesday night in a game against Bullis School and could be sidelined at least four to six weeks, his physician said yesterday.Goodman, who received national attention last season when he averaged 39 points for Pikesville's Talmudical Academy, suffered a severe sprain and partial torn ligament in his left ankle in the third period of a 65-62 loss to visiting Bullis of Montgomery County.

An emergency fund-raising effort has produced money to cover back pay for teachers at the Talmudical Academy through May 15, and at least one more paycheck will be coming soon, organizers say."We're moving along," said Rabbi Tzi Hersh Weinreb of the Shomrei Emunah Congregation in the 6200 block of Greenspring Ave. Rabbi Weinreb is leading the fund-raising effort.In two weeks, $265,000 of the $440,000 needed to pay teachers for the entire academic year has been collected.Dr. Michael J. Elman, new president of the school's board of directors, said efforts are continuing to resolve the school's larger financial problems.
