TAKOMA PARK - This is a town where tie-dyed clothing and Birkenstocks never go out of fashion, a place where aging hippies and young vegetarians, potters and folk musicians, peaceniks and women's rights lawyers make their home. Yet even the free-spirited folks in this self-proclaimed "Berkeley of the East" are having a hard time pushing through one of the most popular of liberal causes: a handgun ban. More than 18 months have passed since anti-gun activists went door to door collecting signatures for a referendum to outlaw the possession and sale of handguns in Takoma Park.

TAKOMA PARK - Just days after the election and the Center for Voting and Democracy looked like the aftermath of a flood in a copy shop. The phones had gone crazy. The coffee pot was burbling for a refill. The three-person staff, besotted with French roast, though bleary-eyed and frazzled, seemed strangely exhilarated. "Before the election we had all these stupid calls from people who wanted us to tell them where to go to vote," said Eric Olson, the idealistic 30-year-old deputy director who wears his hair in a ponytail.

Known primarily for his defense, Derrick Snowden didn't take long in a recent practice to impress his fellow U.S. All-Stars with some offensive moves that will be on display against the Capital All-Stars in tomorrow night's 27th Capital Classic at MCI Center in Washington. "All it took," said Snowden, a two-time All-Metro pick from Archbishop Spalding, "was a couple of crossover dribbles to show my quickness," along with a couple of drives to the basket, of course. Snowden's efforts earned him the nickname "Baby-I," after former Georgetown star Allen Iverson, from U.S. All-Star teammates such as North Carolina-bound Adam Boone of Minnesota and Clemson-bound Tony Stockman of Ohio.

Guard Joe Mathis scored a team-high 20 points, and Takoma Academy broke open a close game with an 18-10 third quarter to roll past host Bowling Brook, 72-60, in a Beltway Basketball League matchup. Thoroughbreds senior forward Ian Brenner led all scorers with 24 points, but only senior guard Randy Echols could join his teammate in double digits. Meanwhile, Goodman -- playing in just his second game after he sprained and partially tore a ligament in his left ankle on Dec. 14 -- had a solid all-around game as he recorded 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

TAKOMA PARK -- By a 5-to-1 margin, voters in a mock election called on the City Council to enact a ban on handguns. The petition question on Tuesday's ballot lost its authority when a Montgomery County Circuit judge ruled that state law prohibits local jurisdictions from passing gun control laws in all but a few circumstances. However, at least two City Council members say they will attempt to draft an ordinance that complies with state law but allows Takoma Park to ban handguns within 100 yards of public places.
