Ever since he was a kid, Benjamin Arem wanted to be a lawyer. When he graduated from Muhlenberg College in 2006, Arem put his law school aspirations on hold to become an accountant. All the while, law remained his passion. So, in the fall of 2009, he enrolled in the University of Baltimore School of Law. Now about to graduate, Arem is nervous of his prospects. He scours job listings, sends reams of resumes and cover letters, but hasn't gotten any solid leads. "I've gone from having a well-paid, stable job and being debt-free, to now drowning in debt and being unemployed," Arem said.

In a move that had become little more than a formality, the Ravens announced today that they will use the franchise tag on Ray Rice, a decision that both sides hope will be the precursor to a long-term extension for the Pro Bowl running back. But the team also announced that it had cut veterans Chris Carr and Lee Evans. It placed running back Ricky Williams on the reserve/retired list, meaning the Ravens will retain his rights if he decides not come out of retirement. Carr, a reserve at cornerback who was hampered by injuries all season, was schedule to make $2.5 million ($3.45 million against the cap.)

Ravens officials watched, occasionally with jaws dropped, as Ray Rice danced and darted around opposing defenders in his first four NFL seasons. Now the time has come for the Ravens to wrap up Rice and make sure that the diminutive running back remains one of the focal points of their offense going forward. Monday marks the first day teams are allowed to place the franchise tag on one of their own unrestricted free agents, meaning that the Ravens are officially on the clock in their effort to sign Rice to a contract extension.

I am deeply indebted to Kory Stamper of Merriam-Webster for the latest post at  harm-less drudg-ery , for a Latin tag that explains much.  Ms. Stamper tweeted one of those plain facts of lexicography the other day, one that I, too have remarked on, that irregardless , though scorned in formal written English, is nevertheless as word. And has been for some time. For merely stating a simple truth, she was inundated with comments of the YOUR A MORON variety.  Philosophically, she turned to the Latin tag that now gives me comfort:  Aliqua non possunt quin merdam moveare , “There are those who cannot help but stir the turd.” (I believe that responsible translation might permit an alternative monosyllable for turd .)

Owner Steve Bisciotti made one thing clear at the annual State of the Ravens address Wednesday: The face of the Ravens' offense will not change this offseason. "Ray [Rice] and Joe Flacco will be part of this football team next year, guaranteed," Bisciotti said. Rice, who led the NFL in yards from scrimmage and scored a franchise-record 15 touchdowns, is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Flacco, the much-maligned quarterback who was likely a dropped pass by Lee Evans away from leading his team to the Super Bowl, is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

If it has been a while since you've driven through the heart of this Eastern Shore city, the buildings might come as a shock. One after another, they tower shiny and modern above the chain restaurants and strip-mall shops that dominate Route 13. The buildings, three of them with a combined price tag of $165 million, are the outward manifestation of Salisbury University's changing self-image. For years, Salisbury was known for its proximity to the beach and for the ease with which its name (then Salisbury State)

If you have tickets to the Harbaugh Bowl and like tagging yourself on Facebook, then I've got a news item for you. The Ravens will debut a cool piece of technology called the Ravens FanCam at Thursday night's game at M&T Bank Stadium. Before the game, a 360-degree, high-definition camera will snap a photograph of the crowd at the stadium. It has a resolution of 10 billion pixels, so every person in attendance can be found in the photo. The Ravens will put the photo on Facebook so fans can find themselves and tag appropriately on Facebook.

An off-street bike trail links Truxton Park in Annapolis to the Bates Sports Complex. A bicycle lane runs along Edgewood Road between the Back Creek Nature Park and Bay Ridge Road. A snippet of shared bicycle-motor vehicle lane cuts the angle from Bladen Street to Northwest Street. There are six miles of trails in the city, but few connections between them, and almost no markers to point out routes to popular destinations. The city council is considering a plan to create a network of 34 miles of marked bicycle routes: a mix of bike lanes on city streets, shared-use lanes for drivers and cyclists, and off-road paths.

The most controversial of four proposed sites for a Baltimore-area center for transferring cargo between trucks and trains carries the lowest cost estimate, while one that has virtually no close neighbors would cost nearly twice as much, according to officials of CSX and the Maryland Department of Transportation. But during a news briefing Tuesday at the agency's headquarters, the officials offered assurances that while all of the locations remain in the running, none is favored over the others.

If the Backstreet Boys and new Kids on the Block concert has you wanting to relive the '80s and '90s, there's plenty of options available, including several dance parties, nostalgia acts and even laser tag. The Ottobar 's upstairs floor has long been a shrine to the kind of unadulterated pop that flourished then. On Saturday, DJs Sarrs and Starlight host a no cover "All Excess" night that will feature a selection of the best of INXS, Depeche Mode, The Cure and other new wave classics.
