Szymanski of Rock Hall, MD, Frank and Katy Szymanski of Towson, MD, Tom and Debbie Szymanski of Marriottsville, MD; loving grandmother of Michelle Roan, Donna Armiger, Melody, Frank, Tom, Michael, David and Erin Szymanski; dear sister of Frances Muller and Pearl Kalinowski. Also survived by nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Also predeceased by four sisters and one brother.

Ron A. Szymanski, who was chief software architect at Aberdeen Proving Ground, died July 26 of stomach cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. He was 34. Born and raised in Middlesex, N.J., Mr. Szymanski was a 1996 graduate of Middlesex High School. In 2000, he earned a bachelor's degree in math education from The College of New Jersey in Ewing. In 2004, he earned a master's degree in computer science from Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J. "Ron always had a gift for computers, so that led him to accept an opportunity at Fort Monmouth rather than going into teaching," said his wife of nine years, the former Amy Erica Speiser.

Marion P. Szymanski, a retired Baltimore County public school educator who enjoyed entertaining children with her stories, died Feb. 12 of pulmonary disease at her Edgemere home. She was 75. Marion Phillips, the daughter of a Bethlehem Steel worker and a concert pianist, was born in Baltimore and was raised in the Lodge Forest neighborhood, near Edgemere. She was a 1952 graduate of Sparrows Point High School and began teaching kindergarten at Chesapeake Terrace Elementary School in 1964.

Frank Szymanski ended a 29-year collegiate coaching career yesterday when he resigned as head coach of women's basketball at Loyola College.Assistant coach Donna Seybold has been named interim head coach and will be on the sidelines when Loyola meets Manhattan College, her alma mater, tomorrow night at Reitz Arena."

James Szymanski, whose military career spanned both world wars and the Korean War, died Sunday of cardiac arrest at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary's County, where he had been a resident since 1986. He was 96.Born in Plosk, Poland, he came to Baltimore with his family in 1902 and settled on a farm near Bear Creek.He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1915 and was a marksman and rifle instructor, winning medals in many shooting competitions.He was sent to France in August 1918 to train riflemen.

The National Football League and NFL Alumni Association had gone their separate ways for much too long with a non-working relationship that became counter-productive. That has now changed. The two have moved closer together, which is a more ideal arrangement for all concerned.The former players and the league they once played for have gotten together and settled differences, real or imagined. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Dick Szymanski, executive director of NFL Alumni, came to an understanding that best serves the interests of both organizations.

So extol the names and achievements of Dick Szymanski, Lou Michaels, two standout Baltimore Colts from the team's glorious past; and the all-time women's college basketball scorer Carol Blazejowski. Their formal induction into the Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame was held last night amid grand fanfare and celebration.The Polish Century Club welcomed a capacity gathering of over 500 to the dinner and enshrinement ceremonies that conferred the highest honor that can come to an American athlete of Polish descent, male or female.

The public-address announcer at the Liberty boys soccer games has nicknamed Dave Szymanski "The Catapult" because of his long throw-ins from the sideline. The junior striker lived up to his nickname last night, helping the host Lions get their first goal and a 2-0 victory over Central Maryland Conference foe Frederick in Eldersburg. Senior defender Ryan Ford and junior forward Jason Engles scored for Liberty, which remained undefeated in the conference with a 2-0-1 record and a 6-3-1 record overall.

In Liberty High soccer circles, Dave Szymanski's rifle throw-ins have earned him the nickname "The Catapult." So with the score tied last night against Westminster and the forward set to put the ball in play, teammate Jesse Robinson knew exactly where he belonged. "My coach just says to stay in front of the keeper," Robinson said. The positioning paid off, as Szymanski's throw from 30 yards found Robinson at eye level, and the defender headed it in with 28:22 left to give the host Lions a 2-1 win and keep them unbeaten.
