First up is a second straight visit from the Soul, which the Blast dominated in the second half. The Blast used a balanced attack in the opener, led by newcomer Tony Donatelli's three goals and a good first game for rookie goalkeeper Troy Hernandez (nine saves)

After surviving an oh-so-close call against the Syracuse Silver Knights in the semifinals of the Major Indoor Soccer League playoffs, Baltimore Blast head coach Danny Kelly has been preaching to his top-ranked team to take nothing for granted this time of the year, especially not with the Blast two wins away from its second straight MISL championship. "Hopefully we've learned something from that," Kelly said Thursday. "There are no easy games, especially against a team like Missouri, as talented as they are. " Tonight, the Blast opens its championship series against the Missouri Comets at the Independence Events Center in Independence, Mo.. The second game of the series and a 15-minute tiebreaking minigame, if necessary, will be played Sunday at the Baltimore Arena.

Pushed to the absolute limit by the Syracuse Silver Knights in the Major Indoor Soccer League's semifinal round, the Blast showed why it is the league's defending champion Tuesday at Baltimore Arena. Forced to play a deciding, 15-minute minigame after the Silver Knights claimed the second game earlier of the semifinal series earlier in the evening, the Blast scored and defended just enough to come away with a thrilling, 4-3 win and earn the right to defend its crown. Syracuse took a 9-6 win in Game 2 with a strong fourth quarter to tie the series at 1, but the Blast regrouped and did what it took to move forward in front of an announced crowd of 3,822.

On a night when the Blast honored one of its all-time greatest players, it also continued to put itself in position to add a 14th championship banner at Baltimore Arena. Tony Donatelli and Lucio Gonzaga each had two goals and the Blast held off the Syracuse Silver Knights, 10-9, in their final home game of the Major Indoor Soccer League regular season before an announced 8,385. The Blast improved to 15-3 and have won seven consecutive games. The Blast, which already has clinched a playoff spot, trails the first-place Milwaukee Wave (15-2)

The Blast will open the 2012-13 season at 1st Mariner Arena against the expansion Chicago Soul on Nov. 3 at 7:35 p.m. In a rematch of the 2011 and 2012 Major Indoor Soccer League championship, the Blast will face the Milwaukee Wave for the first time on Nov. 16 at 7:35 p.m. in Baltimore. The two teams will meet four times during the 26-game slate, which was released Friday. The Blast and Wave will also square off on Dec. 22 and Jan. 12, both at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee, and in the regular-season finale on Feb. 23 at 7:35 p.m. in Baltimore.

The Blast (8-3) dropped to one game behind the first-place Milwaukee Wave (9-2), while third-place Syracuse improved to 8-4 heading into its rematch at Baltimore Arena on Friday night. The winning goal came after the Silver Knights, with an extra attacker on the field, won a free kick at the edge of the Blast's area.

The Blast rallied from a 6-0 first-quarter deficit to earn a 14-12 overtime win against the host Syracuse Silver Knights on Friday night. Tony Donatelli scored the game-winner, his second goal of the night, 1:28 into the extra period to lift the Blast (13-4) into a first-place tie with the Milwaukee Wave. The Blast's Stephen DeRoux scored 2:17 into the final quarter, tying the game at 12. The Blast was able to sneak away with two wins this weekend, sweeping the Syracuse Silver Knights in a home-and-home series that concluded with an 11-6 victory Saturday night. Stephen DeRoux snapped a 6-6 game with a goal coming with 5:03 left in the fourth quarter, and Ptah Myers added a 3-point goal in the closing seconds to seal the win before an announced crowd of 6,316 at 1st Mariner Arena . The Blast improves to 17-5 on the season and remains in second place in the Major Indoor Soccer League, one game behind the Milwaukee Wave (16-2)

Goalkeeper William Vanzela was named the Points-Against Average Champion of the Major Indoor Soccer League after a standout regular season for the playoff-bound Blast. Vanzela, the 2013 MISL Championship Series Most Valuable Player, set a current-era league record with a 5.30 points-against average as he helped the Blast claim the regular-season championship. Vanzela's mark was almost half that of his nearest rival, the Milwaukee Wave's Marcel Feenstra (10.06), and he recorded a pair of shutouts in 15 appearances.

The Blast has had many offensive stars come and go over the course of winning six professional indoor soccer championships since 2003, but one thing that never leaves is the team's strong commitment to defense. This season, the defending Major Indoor Soccer League champions have been at their frugal best.  Heading into the last home weekend of the regular season, the Blast is 13-3 and in second place in the MISL, assured a playoff spot with four games remaining. The team's tidy play on defense (the Blast has yielded 79 points in 16 games, a smidge under 5 per game)

Bandbox and Ilikecandy won their respective races Monday at Laurel Park. Bandbox took the $250,000 General George Handicap (G3), giving the horse its first win in nearly three years. Under Xavier Perez , Bandbox, who is trained by Rodney Jenkins , completed the 7-furlong distance in 1:24.18 and won by four lengths. Monday's 10-race card was the first since last Wednesday. A powerful storm dumped 17 inches of snow and nearly an inch of ice at the Central Maryland track last week which caused Laurel officials to cancel live racing last week.

Indoor soccer Blast rallies past Syracuse, clinches playoff berth The visiting Blast scored the last three goals to defeat the Syracuse Silver Knights, 12-10, on Friday night, clinching a Major Indoor Soccer League playoff spot and moving into a first-place tie. Trailing 10-6 in the third quarter after Syracuse's Neto scored on a restart, Baltimore (11-3) countered quickly and got a short-handed tap-in by Patrick Healey on an assist from Marco Mangione to get within two points at 11:02.
