People driving down a two-lane road in Jacksonville often slow down at a large Maryland Historical Society marker with the heading "Quinn. " It reads: "500-acre grant in 1704 to Thomas Mac Nemara. Later called Sweet Air. Charles and Daniel Carroll, Mac Nemara's kinsmen, acquired the property and sold it in 1751 to Roger Boyce, who built the present house. It was purchased in 1785 for Henry Hill Carroll, who died here in 1804. His son, Henry Carroll, sold it in 1838. " This could almost be a page from a 200-year-old courthouse document, were it not for the fact that a three-story, brick colonial sits at the end of the lane as a monument to the past.

Hikers may soon be able to walk on extended public trails in the Sweet Air section of Gunpowder Falls State Park in Baltimore County, and anglers may have additional access to the Sawmill Branch of the Little Gunpowder River. On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will go before the state Board of Public Works to request approval to buy a conservation easement on 209 acres of land next to that section of the park for $995,000. "We're very pleased to preserve this section of the park and at the same time provide public access," said Emily Wilson, director of land acquisition and planning for the state DNR. DNR is requesting the easement purchase through its Program Open Space, a nationally recognized program that acquires and develops recreational and open space areas.

Do you feel the nip in the air? Runners do. For them, the advent of fall means more than changing leaves and back to school. Cooler weather and coming races (the Baltimore Running Festival is October 13) make autumn the ideal time to run in the great outdoors. Baltimore is full of places to run, from stately neighborhoods to waterside paths. But for some runners, nothing beats the off-road experience. "Even if you start off easy, it's fun to explore," says Chris Cucuzella, a member of the Baltimore Road Runners Club, a trail running group.
