YOU KNOW, John Campisi is a very different kind of guy. This guy has a job and he's busy!" That's Mariska Hargitay, comparing Hilary Swank's current beau, movie agent Campisi, to her ex-hubby, actor Chad Lowe. I'm sure Mariska, didn't mean to diss Chad, who has already been hammered a bit by Miss Swank - remember that Vanity Fair profile? Oh, well, maybe Mariska can make it up and give Chad a role on Law & Order: SVU. Swank is all glam and feminine on the cover and inside W. Those qualities - or lack thereof - are much the point of the story and Swank's ongoing career crisis.

Actress Hilary Swank let Oprah Winfrey chop off a little more than 9 inches of her hair during a taped segment that is to air on The Oprah Winfrey Show today. The TV shearing was done in the name of charity: Swank, 33, donated her locks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which works with the American Cancer Society to provide wigs at no charge to women with hair loss caused by their cancer treatments. Swank says she has been growing her hair "for the last six months to donate. I've been taking a lot of vitamins and taking really good care of it knowing that it would go to a woman in need."

Hilary Swank has Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd to thank for her Best Actress Oscar for Million Dollar Baby, reports the New York Post -- because the role was refused by both actresses. Producer Albert S. Ruddy's first choice for the part of a tragic female boxer was Bullock, who turned down the part when she was told she could not pick the director. Ruddy next approached Judd, whose salary demands would have busted the budget. After Ruddy finally settled on Swank, Bullock's agent called him and said she would do the picture after all, but "Al just said, `Too late,'" says a source.

Hilary Swank rushes into a hotel suite, all sharp angles and big bones, plops down on a seat and dazzles with a toothy, very attractive smile. She's lanky and friendly and looks All-American smashing in a black dress and heels. A tomboy with sex appeal, Swank is the totally hot jock girlfriend you took (or wish you did) to the senior prom. WHAT DOES this mean? Hilary Swank, the two-time Oscar winner, was shopping for a baby bed at Bellini in Beverly Hills. Her boyfriend, agent John Campisi, accompanied her. Maybe she was just getting a gift for an expectant friend. Or for herself? More shopping Britney Spears was also spotted shopping in Beverly Hills -- not for baby furniture, blessedly! The seeds of most biblical horror movies are sown in the Book of Revelation; The Reaping at least gets marks for originality for springing from Exodus. The film is anchored by Hilary Swank's strong performance as Katherine, a Louisiana State University professor and former minister whose expertise is the debunking of "miracles." The actress skillfully balances hard-headed cynicism with emotional wounds that a lesser performer might play ham-handedly. The Reaping (Warner Bros.) Staring Hilary Swank, David Morrissey.

This is a love story between a man and a machine. It's obsessive and unrequited, this affair, a tale where the themes of pursuit and persistence rival that of Moby-Dick. The Ahab is Albert L. Swank Jr., a cyclotron his white whale. After 15 years of looking for a nuclear particle accelerator, something the Alaska man hopes could fight cancer in his state, Swank thinks the cyclotron of his dreams could be right here in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins -- free for the taking. But between Swank and sweet scientific satisfaction stand a series of increasingly tricky obstacles -- the least of which is the logistics of moving the 20-ton device more than 4,000 miles.

Forget about those lips, those eyes: What tears you up about Hilary Swank from the start of Million Dollar Baby are those gums, those teeth. As an L.A. waitress from the Ozarks who strives to be a champion boxer, she opens up her face with the jaw-wide smiles and grimaces of a woman who wouldn't think of molding an emotional expression for effect. With homegrown American material, Swank has proved herself a killer actor. She was devastating as the gender-confused "Brandon Teena" in her Oscar-winning performance in Boys Don't Cry, and she brings a similarly remarkable blend of toughness and neediness to her fledgling fighter in Million Dollar Baby.
