The nation's leading travel organization Friday urged the Obama administration to block the sale of E15, a new ethanol-laced gasoline, that could damage as many as 228 million vehicles that are not designed to run on it. After years of controversy, the Environmental Protection Agency in June approved the sale of E15, a blend that contains up to 15 percent corn-based ethanol, for cars made after 2001. But AAA said its survey shows that 95 percent of consumers were unaware of E15 and the potential that it could damage engines and void warranties.

The NFL should be ashamed of itself for suspending Ravens safety Ed Reed for a game because of his hit on Pittsburgh receiver Emmanuel Sanders in the third quarter of Sunday night's game. It's one thing to fine a guy several thousand dollars, but another when you start taking away game checks. That's when you start messing with his livelihood and his family. The NFL has crossed the line. I could see if Reed was another James Harrison, the Steelers' outside linebacker who intentionally tries to hurt players.

Two men accused of nearly beheading three children in a horrific attack in Northwest Baltimore over eight years ago have rejected a plea deal from prosecutors, a defense attorney for one of them said. Brian Murphy, who is representing Adan Canela, 25, said his client and co-defendant Policarpio Espinoza Perez, 30, turned down a deal at a court hearing Thursday. Had they accepted, Canela and Perez would have received life sentences with all but 40 years suspended, Murphy said. "The state made it pretty clear: Take it today or it's withdrawn," Murphy said.

A Baltimore City police officer has been suspended after officials were notified by the FBI that he is under investigation, a police spokesman confirmed. Nearly two years after a towing kickback scandal rocked the Baltimore Police Department, 14 officers who were not criminally charged remain suspended with pay and unavailable to perform police functions, officials said. Police say they must wait for final word from prosecutors on whether the officers will face criminal charges before the agency can determine whether to punish them or clear them of wrongdoing. But the case is emblematic of a slow-moving disciplinary system that robs resources from a department that has the second-highest staffing per capita in the nation.

After pleading guilty to a charge of reckless driving Friday afternoon in Prince George's County District Court, Maryland forward James Padgett will not be suspended by coach Mark Turgeon, an athletic department spokesman said. Turgeon was not available to comment. Padgett was arrested in College Park in June and charged with driving while impaired, but that was dropped amid "a number of issues", according to Padgett's attorney David Putzi. Among them was the amount of mouth alcohol in Padgett's system as a result of the player's acid reflux condition.

Anne Arundel County police have taken the badge of a former district commander who is now a target in the state prosecutor's investigation, Chief Larry W. Tolliver said Thursday. Capt. Eric Hodge received a "target letter" this week from the same prosecutors who are pursuing the criminal misconduct case against County Executive John R. Leopold. Tolliver confirmed the letter and said he suspended Hodge's police powers that day after meeting with State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt and promising the department's cooperation.
