DEDHAM, Mass. - For her 92nd birthday today, Mary Giorgio did not dare hope that Boston church officials would reverse their decision to close her beloved Roman Catholic parish. But that is what happened, ending 13 months of anguish at St. Susanna Parish. "I am elated, and I am surprised," said Giorgio, who has attended daily Mass at St. Susanna since the red brick house of worship opened in 1961. Her two daughters were confirmed and married in the church with the soaring, A-frame roof, and when her husband Salvatore died five years ago, it's where his funeral was held.

Baltimore playwright Kimberley Lynne definitely has a thing for Shakespeare. Of more than a half dozen plays she's had produced locally, at least three - including a brief sketch staged by the Women's Project - are about the writer or his work. "Love for Words," the most serious-minded of these, is the current production by the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival. Lynne has made some revisions since this biographical drama premiered at AXIS Theatre in 1997. But though the play is often witty and entertaining, its flaws are magnified by the inevitable comparison to the Bard.

An enormous pot blows off steam on Susanna Cruz's stove as her extended family trickles in from work and school. If it were summertime in any other Maryland household, the 36-quart vaporera might hold that day's crab harvest. But it is Christmastime, and in Anne Arundel County, where the Hispanic population has more than doubled in the last decade, Susanna Cruz and her sister Rosalie are making dozens of tamales - cornmeal dough stuffed with something spicy or sweet, wrapped in corn husks and steamed.

It's game night, and the Pinecrest Wolverettes are getting ready. The Wolverettes are my daughter's soccer team. They're all 4 years old, and they're all girls. They've been practicing under their coach, Coach Susanna. They're learning the fundamentals of soccer, which are: 1. You're supposed to kick the ball. 2. You're not supposed to pick up the ball. 3. Even if you really really want to pick up the ball, you're not supposed to. 4. If you have to go potty, try to wait for a water break instead of just trotting off the field.

WASHINGTON - When British writer Susanna Clarke made a stop here on her monthlong, American book tour, she had one sightseeing request: The Library of Congress. The writer walked through the marble halls and peeked through a window into the lofty Main Reading Room. She peered at a Gutenberg Bible behind glass casing. Her face relaxed when she thumbed through works in the rare books room. "You must tell me when we need to move along," she said to a Library of Congress staff member while examining one 19th-century volume at a long table.
