If anyone wants to nitpick at Navy's football success over the past decade, a starting point - and finish line - might be the team's record in bowl games. Going into Saturday's Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl against Arizona State (7-5) at San Francisco's AT&T Park, Navy (8-4) has lost four of its last five postseason games and five of eight since 2003. Though two of the losses have been close - a 25-24 defeat to Boston College in the 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., and a 35-32 defeat to Utah the next year at the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego - many have been blowouts.

PASADENA, Calif. -- It was supposed to be over. That is the way it had been all year for Arizona State quarterback Jake Plummer. He always got the final word and the 83rd Rose Bowl wasn't supposed to be any different. So Plummer twisted and turned and slipped into the end zone in the final two minutes of the game, putting Arizona State ahead and very much in line for the school's first national championship. It was the perfect ending to a perfect season for the best clutch quarterback in college football.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Rick Pitino says he wants his Kentucky '' Wildcats to play defense as if they haven't eaten in two weeks, and last night they went on a feeding frenzy.Pressure defense and a seemingly endless bench inspired Kentucky's 97-73 drubbing of overmatched Arizona State in a Southeast Regional semifinal at Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. The victory sends the top-seeded Wildcats, 28-4 and winners of 11 in a row, against second-seeded North Carolina in tomorrow's regional final.

LAHAINA, Hawaii -- The Arizona State Sun Devils came to the Maui Invitational with no national ranking, no hype and no pressure. In other words, everything that the seventh-ranked Maryland Terrapins took with them last week from College Park. But the Sun Devils now have something the Terps don't: a championship trophy to take home from Maui. With an awesome display of three-point shooting down the stretch that backed up a strong first-half performance by junior center Mario Bennett, Arizona State upset the Terps, 97-90, before a raucous crowd of 2,500 at the Civic Center.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Arizona State gained the Sweet 16. Manhattan gained another dose of respect. That was the outcome in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional yesterday at the Pyramid, where the Sun Devils overcame a four-point halftime deficit to earn a 64-54 decision that sent them to Birmingham, Ala., for this week's regional semifinal matchup with top-seeded Kentucky. It didn't come easy for the 13th-ranked Sun Devils (24-8) who trailed by as many as 11 before a barrage of free throws closed the gap to four, then prospered after coach Bill Frieder made some key offensive adjustments.

PASADENA, Calif. -- The undefeated Arizona State Sun Devils could win the 83rd Rose Bowl by 50 points today and they still wouldn't know for sure. They could knock fourth-ranked Ohio State all the way back to the frozen Midwest and they would only be assured of being the runner-up for college football's mythical national championship. No matter. It still is the biggest football game in the history of Arizona State University, and it very well could turn out to be for all the marbles, at least for the cardiac kids from Tempe, Ariz.

SCOUTING REPORT Ravens run offense vs. Cardinals run defense -- RAVENS With the league's top rushing attack, the Ravens are running the ball with a more physical style than during their Super Bowl season. Jamal Lewis, who is averaging an NFL-high 152.8 yards a game, is looking to set a team record with his fourth consecutive 100-yard game. Arizona is allowing 3.2 yards a carry, which is tied for fourth best in the league, but no team has really attacked the Cardinals primarily on the ground.

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Ohio State Buckeyes have it all figured out. If they play Arizona State's wide receivers tight, stifle the Sun Devils' running game and put a lot of pressure on the quarterback, the 83rd Rose Bowl should be a piece of cake.It would be a nice theory if Sun Devils quarterback Jake Plummer had one predictable bone in his body. The Nebraska Cornhuskers tried to pressure him, and he kicked them right out of the national championship picture. The UCLA Bruins thought they had him all wrapped up in October, and he brought Arizona State back from a tremendous second-half deficit to keep the Sun Devils' unlikely hopes for a national title alive.
