Seventy-nine seniors and candidates for master's degrees from Carroll County were among the 284 students eligible to receive diplomas yesterday at Western Maryland College's annual commencement ceremony.Three county residents also received recognition as College Scholars for their successful completion of a four-year program of enriched curricular and extracurricular activities.Carroll County members of the Class of 1994 are:* Eldersburg: John L. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Friedman of Lutherville, MD are proud to announce the marriage of their daughter, Michele Friedman, to Mr. John Langley Sharkey, son of Dr. and Mrs. Edward W. Sharkey of Leesburg, FL. The wedding took place on May 28, 2007 in Cancun, Mexico. Michele is a 1994 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Boston University in Biomedical Engineering and a 2007 Summa Cum Laude PharmD graduate of the University of Maryland. She is a Registered Pharmacist employed by CVS. John is a 1991 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Finance.

Hunter of Columbia has been named executive director of the State Board for Community Colleges.An educator with more than 20 years of experience in Maryland's community college system, Hunter has been serving as the board's interim executive director since May. She graduated summa cum laude from College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa., and received her Ph.D. from Loyola University in Chicago.

Sales Focus hires Cass Tyson as its managing partner Cass Tyson of Baltimore has been hired as managing partner of Sales Focus Inc., a sales outsourcing company, whose president, Anthony Horwath, lives in Woodbine. Tyson established a Web design company and has held positions in Internet connectivity and telecom businesses and e-business solution development firms. Sales Focus, which provides services from sales consulting to professional sales training, moved from Columbia to Owings Mills.

Linda Stofberg Cunfer and Sue Head, both of Carroll County, received the Argonaut Award at Western Maryland College for achieving perfect grades at commencement ceremonies yesterday in the Gill Physical Education Learning Center.Ms. Cunfer and Ms. Head earned 4.0 grade point averages during their academic careers.Dr. Herb Smith, professor of political science, described Ms. Cunfer as an "inquisitive student who possesses high energy and drive in her commitment to thoroughly research any subject."

Yesterday was a great day to be outside, unless you were among the many Marylanders graduating from college -- then, inside a gym or an auditorium was the place to be.The Baltimore Arena downtown was two-thirds full of family members and friends of nearly 700 graduates at Loyola College's 146th commencement yesterday.Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos, who received an honorary doctorate of humane letters, spoke about the sense of despair created by increased homelessness, poverty and illness nationwide.
