WASHINGTON -- Adm. Jeremy M. "Mike" Boorda, the Navy's top admiral, who killed himself Thursday, left a suicide note contending that he made an "honest mistake" in wearing Vietnam-era combat decorations that he had not earned.The chief of naval operations wrote that he was killing himself to avoid becoming the center of another Navy scandal."He didn't want another reason for any negative perception of the Navy," said a senior Pentagon officer familiar with the note Boorda left to his sailors.

The body of a Harford County man who had been missing since early last month was recovered Tuesday from the Susquehanna River below Conowingo Dam, Maryland State Police said. The man has been identified as Scott R. Hammer, 57, of Havre de Grace. His body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, according to a news release from State Police. Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Maryland Natural Resources Police officers were contacted by workers at Conowingo Dam, who reported seeing a body lying on a rock in the river after the water level was lowered, State Police said.

Hours before commandeering a Dundalk rowhouse and taking three people hostage, Joseph C. Palczynski wrote a suicide note to his mother and left it at a Chase home, the home's owner said yesterday. Palczynski wrote the note on the back of a child's homework assignment and left it folded on a night stand, said Douglas Wilkinson, owner of the home in the 10200 block of Bevans Lane. "He was finishing up the note when we walked into the house," Wilkinson said. "He said he didn't know if he was going to make it out alive."

Divers and rescue personnel searched in the waters around Conowingo Dam Wednesday night for a 56-year-old Havre de Grace man who was reported missing and may have jumped from the dam, Maryland State Police said. As of Thursday afternoon, however, there was no confirmation that anyone had jumped from the dam, nor had anything been found. Around 7:20 p.m Wednesday, a dive team and other rescue personnel were dispatched to the dam for a report of a possible suicide A monitored Harford County emergency radio broadcast advised rescue personnel that an abandoned vehicle, with a suicide note inside, had been found near the dam. Rescue personnel called from both Harford and Cecil counties were instructed to meet in the "fisherman's wharf" area.

A Westview man, upset over arguing with his girlfriend on his 24th birthday yesterday, fatally shot himself after holding off numerous police with gunfire, said a Baltimore County police spokeswoman. The man's name was not released.Cpl. Vickie Warehime said that when police arrived at the man's home in the 6000 block of Harford Ave. about 7: 30 p.m. after the girlfriend reported hearing a shot over the phone they were fired on and took cover. She said the county SWAT team moved in later with shields and escorted their colleagues to safety.

A knife-wielding man who was shot and killed by a Howard County police officer Jan. 19 in Ellicott City was carrying a suicide note, police said yesterday, raising new questions about the man's behavior.Employees at G.L. Shacks Grill on Old Annapolis Road called police about 1: 30 p.m., saying John Sierra, 39, was being disorderly and had a knife. When Sgt. A. J. Bellido de Luna approached him in a nearby parking lot, Sierra brandished a knife and, witnesses said, taunted the officer. Bellido de Luna shot Sierra once in the chest from about 10 feet away.

An Essex man committed suicide early yesterday in the Baltimore County Detention Center, hours after he was given two life sentences for trying to arrange the killing of a former girlfriend, authorities said.About 2 a.m., a jail officer found John Robert Matheson, 51, hanging in his cell by a cloth noose fashioned either from a bedsheet or pillowcase and hooked on a sprinkler pipe attachment, said Sgt. Kevin Novak, a county police spokesman.He was pronounced dead at 2: 20 a.m., after a cardiopulmonary resuscitation effort failed, Novak said.

Nicole Bastan-Siar, despondent over losing a boyfriend, left a six-page suicide note and shot herself in the head at a teen party Saturday night, sources said yesterday.Dr. Theodore King, an assistant medical examiner, determined that the 14-year-old girl, who died at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, committed suicide, a spokeswoman for the office said.A relative of one boy police questioned in the shooting, which took place at an apartment in the 7700 block of Oakwood Road in Glen Burnie, and other sources confirmed that Nicole left a suicide note.

Former Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan had threatened to commit suicide several times before taking his life last month, police records show. In an interview with police detectives, Flanagan's wife described several occasions in which he grabbed a shotgun and walked outside their Sparks home, declaring, "I can't take it anymore. " Each time, Alex Flanagan said, she talked her 59-year-old husband back inside. The account adds to an emerging picture of Flanagan as a troubled man who was struggling with his career and finances and had grappled with suicidal thoughts.

WBAL-TV is standing behind its Wednesday-night report by sportscaster Gerry Sandusky linking the suicide of former Baltimore Orioles pitcher and executive Mike Flanagan to him being "despondent" over being perceived as having failed the team and fans during his time in the O's front office. Last week, a man named Joseph Stack set his Texas home on fire, stole a single-engine plane and intentionally crashed it midday into Austin's Echelon Building, where the local Internal Revenue Service offices are located. Mr. Stack left behind a lengthy suicide note complaining about the U.S. government, and particularly the IRS. His strongly populist letter directed anger at the powerful and wealthy often echoed by liberals. But Mr. Stack's letter was mostly full of conservative rage against the "tyranny" of government taxation.

LEESBURG, Fla. -- Leesburg police released yesterday a note Melinda Duckett wrote just before she killed herself Sept. 8 at her grandparents' home. Duckett wrote a letter addressed to the "public," in which she spoke of her love for her missing 2-year-old son and the anguish she felt at being "faced with ridicule and criticism" as rumors swirled about her role in his disappearance. After completing the unsigned, two-page letter, the 21-year-old left it on the dashboard of her car, then took a shotgun and killed herself inside a closet at her grandparents' Lady Lake, Fla., home.

An expelled Loyola College graduate student accused of setting fire to a former professor's house Thursday morning left behind a confessional note describing thoughts of suicide and vengeance, police said. In the note, Garrett Alder, 25, blamed Loyola professor Bradley Erford for destroying his life and confessed to having homicidal thoughts about his former supervisor, according to charging documents.
