Miriam Trotter from Baltimore was looking for a recipe for what she called sugar cakes. She said her husband's grandmother used to make these soft, thick cookies that were not overly sweet, and that they were a favorite of her daughter and husband. She said that the ingredients were flour, sugar, butter, sour cream and baking soda, but her husband's grandmother passed away before she wrote down the actual recipe. Trish Koza from Iowa City, Iowa, thought she just might have the recipe that Trotter was searching for. She said that her mother-in-law made soft sugar cookies for years and that many of her relatives claimed that she had given them her special recipe.

Last year, Baltimore beer drinkers were introduced to Full Tilt Brewing's Berger Cookie Chocolate Stout. Less than 11 months later, Frederick's Flying Dog Brewery has announced its own collaboration with another Baltimore cookie institution, Otterbein's Bakery. Four types of beer resulted from the partnership: Imperial Hefeweizen (inspired by Otterbein's sugar cookies), Oatmeal Raisin Stout (inspired by Otterbein's oatmeal raisin cookies), Oak-Aged Hazelnut Scotch Ale (inspired by Otterbein's ginger cookies)

Young, newly married, with a baby on the way, Maria Kilduff wanted to start a Christmas tradition. She had an old family recipe that made hundreds of sugar cookies and a new, hungry husband who could eat at least that many. Though money was tight, she splurged on three cookie cutters, then invited Paul, who she called Duff, to join her in the kitchen. It was the Sunday before Christmas, 1948.And so it began, in a Baltimore apartment, the Kilduffs' Christmas cookie-baking tradition. Maria made the batter and rolled the dough, thin as paper; Duff greased the baking sheets and put them in the oven.

When most people think about Creamsicles, they probably picture the fruity frozen dessert. Monica Williams, however, envisioned a cookie. Williams, who owns the baking operation From Momma's Kitchen, has made a second career out of concocting decadent desserts. The 43-year-old former principal of Celebration Christian Academy in Columbia has been experimenting with cookies ever since she started baking at just 8 years old in her mom's kitchen in Philadelphia. “I added M&M's to the first batch of chocolate chip cookies I made,” she remembers.

The Otterbein's Family Bakery has changed a lot since it opened in Baltimore in 1881, from a modest storefront pastry shop to a factory operation that churned out about 7 million cookies last year for grocery stores and vending machines. But one thing hasn't changed: The sweet contents of Otterbein's red-and-white bags still are shepherded to market by the family that started it all. Mark Otterbein, who runs the Windsor Mill-based operation, represents the fourth generation of his family to run the bakery, which celebrated its 125th anniversary this month.

Edward C. "Jack" Blaney, a retired milkman, died Tuesday of cancer at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was 87 and lived in Highlandtown. Born in Baltimore, the youngest of 12 children, he attended school in the city and served in the Army during World War II. He was injured in North Africa and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Blaney married the former Anne Elizabeth Rapp in 1947. They lived together at her family home in Highlandtown for the rest of their lives. Mrs. Blaney died in 1994.

Hilah Glaze, a mother of five and a former Miss Morgan State, died Aug. 21 of a heart infection at St. Agnes Hospital. She was 83. Hilah Brown, the sixth of 10 children of a homemaker and a mail carrier, was born in Baltimore and raised in Upton. After graduating from St. Frances Academy in 1946, she attended Morgan State. Mrs. Glaze was an active and prominent figure on campus, joining the majorettes and Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and being crowned "Miss Morgan" in 1950.

All the presents have been opened; wrapping paper is strewn all over the house. The dog is wearing a large shiny bow, courtesy of the kids; while the cat has one end of a piece of curling ribbon hanging out of her mouth and the other end hanging out her … elsewhere. The joyful voices of happy children emanate from the next room. They're arguing over whose turn it is to play the new video game or hollering, "Quit it! Joseph George Otterbein, the retired baker who created and marketed a popular thin sugar cookie, died Saturday of complications from congestive heart failure at his Lake Montebello home. He was 88. Mr. Otterbein was born above the family bakery at Fort Avenue and Jackson Street in South Baltimore. He attended the Holy Cross School and was a 1941 Loyola High School graduate. During World War II, he served in the Army and was trained as a paratrooper. He was assigned to England and France.

Anybody who thinks Americans are eating only rice cakes and celery has never visited a Baltimore area bakery in December.Bakers go bonkers during the holidays. All those cakes, all those cookies, all those items that somebody's Grandma, used to make and that her modern day descendants gotta, just gotta, have for the holidays.At Otterbein's Bakery in Northeast Baltimore the Otterbein brothers predict they will bake 30,000 pounds of sugar cookies this holiday season. To keep up with demand, the brothers have moved to a larger store and rented two nearby apartments that serve as cookie warehouses.
