KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In the city where everything's up to date, Twentieth Century Mutual Funds is about to go the way of the buggy whip -- in name, at least. WASHINGTON - It happens every time. Every single time I think I've seen the absolute bottom, the skankiest, stinkiest behavior of which human beings are capable, along comes a Clarence Stowers to prove me wrong. In fact, from here on in, I think "Clarence Stowers" will be my synonym for all that is vile and low. As in ..."Man, I'm having a real Clarence Stowers day." Or ... "Dang, I just stepped in some Clarence Stowers." So OK, now you're wondering who Clarence Stowers is and why I'm heaping such lavish abuse upon him. Well, it's simple.

WASHINGTON - Here are two stories of Saudi-U.S. relations. Read them and judge who in this relationship is behaving as if it has the whip hand. As William McGurn reports in The Wall Street Journal, Monica Stowers, an American, married a young Saudi man she had met at the University of Dallas in the early 1980s. They had two children. When both children were still infants, the couple moved to Saudi Arabia. There, as Mr. McGurn writes, Ms. Stowers was in for a "nasty shock." Her husband was already married and had other children by his first wife.

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Tears do not come easily for Jackie Sherrill. If anything, they are a last resort, a reluctant concession, a luxury Sherrill rarely allows himself. But on Oct. 5, with about 2,000 mourners squeezed into Mississippi State University's aging Lee Hall auditorium, Sherrill's eyes betrayed him. He wept. Like a baby. Two days earlier, Sherrill, Mississippi State's football coach, had walked into his office shortly before 7 a.m. and been met by a Mississippi State trainer, who, his own voice unsteady, told him Rodney Stowers, a 20-year-old junior defensive end, had died.

Washington. -- Last week, 72 years and seven months after his death, Cpl. Freddie Stowers of the 371st Infantry finally got the Medal of Honor he had won for gallantry in France in World War I. It took so long because Stowers was black. He is not alone, in being black and a hero. But until the past generation, the U.S. armed forces were reluctant to acknowledge that those traits ever coincided. There is no way to know just how many black Americans deserve recognition for doing more than their duty in wars from the Revolution through Korea.
