McCrory Corp., one of the most familiar names in the variety store business and a fixture in the Baltimore market since the 1950s, sought shelter from its creditors in bankruptcy court today.The Chapter 11 filing in lower Manhattan came as no surprise. On Feb. 15, McCrory defaulted on $3.37 million in debts and announced it was "considering its restructuring options." During the last decade, local, state and federal governments have sought to make smoking inconvenient by restricting where and when people can light up. They have made it more expensive by increasing taxes - to the point that a pack of cigarettes costs at least $10.50 in New York City. They have tried to make it scary by requiring ever larger and blunter warnings about the health risks of smoking on cigarette packaging. And they have worked to make it un-cool, most recently with a new advertising and social media campaign this week aimed at teens.

A successful old-time Pennsylvania department store chain is poised to jump into the Baltimore metropolitan area with at least one and perhaps several stores.Boscov's Department Stores Inc., the nation's largest privately owned department store chain with 28 stores in five states, has discussed entering various shopping centers ringing Interstate 695, according to several sources.But as of yet, Boscov's has not yet committed to any location. The chain also declined to comment on its level of interest in the Baltimore market.

Boscov's department store will return to White Marsh Mall Oct. 7, filling the empty anchor spot the regional chain vacated nearly four years ago after it filed for bankruptcy. "I'm glad we are returning to White Marsh Mall," Albert Boscov, the retailer's chairman and CEO and son of the founder, said in a statement. "It was a great store, and we look forward to creating a new, more exciting Boscov's in the Baltimore area. " The family-owned chain, based in Reading, Pa., once had half a dozen department stores in Maryland.

The Best Buy Co. has signed a lease for a new local distribution center to serve its growing appliance business in the Baltimore/Washington area, company officials said yesterday.The company's 93,104-square-foot center at 6940 San Tomas Road, in Elkridge, dovetails with the Minneapolis-based discount retailer's plan to open several stores in the region."We intend to keep and distribute home appliances there for delivery in the region, as well as establish a service center to repair appliances," said James P. Mixon, a Best Buy senior vice president.

IT WAS THE afternoon of Labor Day and I found myself in the elevator of what is now the Value City department store at the Westview Mall. I glanced around. There was that pink color, the shade Hutzler Bros. used to paint the walls of its department stores. This spot was, of course, a former Hutzler operation now occupied by a different store.This time of the year, I especially think of Howard Street. It was here that you met your friends, bought your bedsheets and saw Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady."

Retailers are typically obsessed with what to put under their roofs, not on them. Yet the nation's biggest store chains are coming to see their immense, flat roofs as an untapped resource. In recent months, chains including Wal-Mart Stores, Kohl's, Safeway and Whole Foods Market have installed solar panels on roofs of their stores to generate electricity on a large scale. One reason is that they are racing to beat a Dec. 31 deadline to gain tax advantages for these projects. So far, most chains have outfitted fewer than 10 percent of their stores.

In a bid to win public support for a new Wegmans in Columbia, company officials have been meeting with residents and sharing more details about the proposed two-story food palace. The grocer is preparing for a hearing Thursday night before the Howard County Planning Board. For the project to proceed, officials must amend a zoning plan that prohibits the business from building on the industrial-zoned property at Snowden River Parkway and McGaw Road. Many people say they are excited about the prospect of a Wegmans store in the county, but some Columbia residents worry that the superstore would threaten smaller village shopping centers that help foster a sense of community in their neighborhoods.

Could Macy's be the key to preventing the department store from becoming a retail relic? Federated Department Stores Inc. hopes that in buying up regional competitors such as Hecht's, Burdines and Marshall Field's and rebranding them with the Macy's nameplate it can create a national department store chain that once again excites shoppers. People like Marty Rogoff think Macy's can pull it off. "I think the name is good enough that they can bring back department stores if they do it the right way," said Rogoff, a professor of marketing and retail studies at Philadelphia University in Pennsylvania.

As the Baltimore market gets ready to lose a familiar department store, it is gaining another - albeit a less familiar one. Boscov's Inc., a family-owned department store chain based in Reading, Pa., will move into anchor spots at three Baltimore-area malls. The vacancies result from the closing later this year of Hecht's, which was bought by Federated Department Stores Inc. from the May Co. last year. The transaction presents a major leap for Boscov's, which has operated in smaller markets for most of its 85 years and will immediately grow by 25 percent.

MEXICO CITY -- As sales gimmicks go, "11.3 pesos" doesn't quite have the ring of "99 cents." But Mexican shoppers such as Jaime Plata don't seem to care. Savings, not slick marketing, draw him to Waldo's Dolar Mart de Mexico, this nation's largest chain of so-called dollar stores. On a recent afternoon, the nightclub owner trolled the aisles of a Waldo's store in the capital's middle-class Anahuac neighborhood. Bottles of apple juice, at two for 11.3 pesos, or about $1.05, were piled in his cart, along with candles and picture frames.

Penney Co. prevailed yesterday over Federated Department Stores Inc. in a joint offer for Alexandria-based Woodward & Lothrop Inc. and its Philadelphia subsidiary, John Wanamaker department stores.During a bankruptcy court hearing measured in minute-by-minute decisions involving tens of millions of dollars, May of St. Louis put an end to a day of one-upmanship with an insurmountable bid that will distribute an estimated $460 million to creditors of the Woodies department store chain, which has operated under bankruptcy protection since January 1994.

Lucky's Convenience Markets Inc., the longtime local superette chain that abruptly shut its doors Monday, has filed for bankruptcy. In court papers filed this week, the company estimated its assets at $50,000 or less and its debts at $1 million to $10 million. Its largest creditors include Coca-Cola Enterprises, Schmidt Baking Co. Inc. and Utz Quality Foods Inc. Lucky's attorney Howard M. Heneson said the company plans to disclose more details, including total assets and debts, next week.

PLANO, Texas - J.C. Penney Co. Inc., the second-largest U.S. department-store chain, posted a fiscal second-quarter profit yesterday of $72 million. Profit from continuing operations was 23 cents a share, compared with a loss of $3 million, or 3 cents a share, in the second quarter last year. The figures exclude results from the Eckerd drugstore chain, which was sold this year. Sales in the period that ended July 31 rose 5.8 percent to $3.86 billion. Fiscal second-quarter profit met analysts' estimates.
