Filled with talky, self-conscious characters culled from the East Coast plutocracy of old, white money, Whit Stillman's films ask the audience to care about a group of spoiled young people who sit around examining their own cosseted navels -- and they actually succeed."

Judith Stillman isn't the least bit surprised when she comes home from work and finds a note from her husband saying he's "gone for the day." She knows exactly what he's up to - one of his twin passions of volleyball and softball - and she approves completely. Richard Stillman, 73, is a lifelong athlete who is happy to be "involved in some form of sports just about every day of the week." "You don't have time to think about slowing down when you keep busy," said Stillman, who plays with two replaced knees.

LOWER MERION, Pa. -- Samuel Stillman wore the poly-cotton safari suit he picked up in South Africa. He demurely mentioned his three times around the world, more than once, and he told the story about being blood brother to an Indian chief, but these were digressions. The lordship was the thing."To the Americans, this is a little odd. I do believe I'm the only one in Philadelphia," the undertaker said recently at his suburban Lower Merion condo, embellished with travel mementos.Stillman, who at 80 still works as a mortician in Philadelphia's East Oak Lane section, has been Lord of the Manor of Haccombe Newton Abbot, in Devon County, England, for about two months now.He likes to say he "acquired" the title.

EMMETSBURG, Iowa -- Jeff Stillman is a fourth-generation farmer who's been battered by floods, droughts and personal hardship. But this fall, his corn turned to gold. A national boom in the use of ethanol - a fuel distilled from corn - almost doubled the value of his harvest. So for Christmas, Stillman is giving his wife a diamond necklace and a trip to Hawaii. And he sold a few bushels to buy himself a red Ford Mustang. "Confidence levels among farmers here are 100 percent higher now than they were in the past, because of ethanol," said Stillman, looking out his kitchen window at 1,200 acres of cornstalk stubble beside an icy lake.

When The Old Farmer's Almanac staffers forecast a February blizzard for the mid-Atlantic Coast - and then discovered they'd gotten it almost right - no one at the office in New Hampshire was all that surprised. Gratified, yes. Surprised, no. The almanac's team of meteorologists boasts an 80-percent accuracy rate. That's even more impressive considering they make predictions more than a year in advance. For Region Three, our region, they forecast a blizzard during Feb. 8-13. With 28.2 inches of snow, who's going to nit-pick a day or two?
