EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is nothing if not a man of convictions. He always sticks with whatever he believes works, even if something else might work better at that time. One of his convictions in the postseason is that Steve Kerr, a member of four NBA title teams, shouldn't play regularly, but Kerr has displayed a knack for coming through at the most important moments. The latest manifestation may have given the Spurs a big boost toward a championship.

DALLAS - Forget Leo Durocher and Vince Lombardi. Nice guys do finish first. Take the San Antonio Spurs and Steve Kerr, though no one has been able to do it in these NBA playoffs. The Spurs will open the NBA Finals at home Wednesday against the New Jersey Nets after a rousing comeback from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. They won the Western Conference finals, 4-2. "It was a great confidence builder," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We've given up so many leads.

CHICAGO -- The Bulls have been the NBA's chameleon team this season -- playing down to the doormats, but rising to the occasion against the powerhouses. Not last night.Scottie Pippen turned in a solid performance -- 24 points, eight rebounds and six steals -- and the Bulls routed the Bullets, 107-92.It was just like old times for the Bullets here last night. Forget the two previous meetings this season, when they humbled the once-mighty three-time champions. This game was all too reminiscent of the not-too-distant past when the Bulls owned the Bullets.

CHICAGO -- There was a major breach of security for yesterday's Game 1 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals. For instead of playing the Orlando Magic, the Chicago Bulls instead faced a team pretending to be the defending conference champion. What other logical explanation could there be for the embarrassing 121-83 drubbing the Magic suffered at the hands of the Bulls at the United Center?Fans expected to see a court full of stars playing out a heavyweight classic. What they got instead was a lopsided display of two-on-five basketball.

Quote: "It was the most excited I've ever been on the baseball field." -- Mike Lieberthal after his pinch-hit, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday night capped a seven-run rally and lifted the Phillies to an 8-7 win over the Pirates. It's a fact: The Brewers have hit at least one home run in their last 14 games.Who's hot: The Phillies' Doug Glanville went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 17 games.Who's not: The Padres' Kevin Brown gave up two homers in a span of seven pitches in the ninth inning of the Padres' win over the Dodgers Tuesday.
