John S. Chudzik, a retired labor attorney and advocate for medical and pension benefits for construction workers, died of acute kidney failure Thursday at the Presbyterian Home of Maryland. He was 93 and a Parkville resident. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he joined the Civil Conservation Corps in the 1930s and worked in forest reclamation. He later enlisted in the Navy and worked in intelligence during World War II in Washington and Hawaii. After the war, he settled in Washington and earned a Bachelor of Arts, a law degree and a doctorate in law from George Washington University.

Herve Massaba came to suburban Baltimore from Africa to finish his education. He reunited with his family, took classes at Baltimore City Community College during the day and worked at night to pay his tuition, his stepmother said. The 24-year-old native of Cameroon was just blocks from his home in the Randallstown area last week when he was shot in the spine, causing an injury that could leave him paralyzed, police said. Baltimore County police said they knew of no motive for the shooting.

Walter Kirk Cunningham, a retired Aberdeen Proving Ground engineer, died of cancer Tuesday in the hospice at Northwest Hospital Center. The longtime Northwood resident was 84. Born in Harford County's Churchville, he moved to Hamilton in Northeast Baltimore as a child. He earned a General Education Development diploma at night school at City College. He worked in construction before serving in the Army during World War II. He landed at Normandy shortly after the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944, and was a member of tank company.
