Over the years, we've seen many "passing the torch" moments in pro wrestling. On Sunday night, we added another to the list when The Shield convincingly beat Evolution. If you read my prediction column, you saw that I had predicted Evolution , though I did say there were a few ways I could see The Shield winning. I thought maybe somehow Roman Reigns could end up with the final pin, or even take out multiple members of Evolution single-handedly. One thing I didn't expect were all three members to be still standing at the end, and for them to have completely dominated the last five minutes of what was a pretty strong match with some great spots in it. While I wouldn't use the term "squash," as it was a long match that did feature Evolution absolutely destroying the Shield members at times, it was a dominant finish that left no doubt as to who the superior team was. Now, I'm not going to say this was Warrior beating Hogan, or Austin beating Shawn Michaels.

The question of what to do with the world heavyweight title has been hanging over the WWE since Daniel Bryan announced two weeks ago that he needed surgery. While it seemed like there might be a resolution on Raw, the decision on the belt was postponed, and the lack of a title feud had a ripple effect over the entire show. The previous week, Stephanie McMahon said that Bryan needed to surrender the title on Raw this week. And yes, he did show up. He said that his injury was worse than expected (which I believe is a work, and was just used to get a reaction from the crowd)

In September 2011, the Occupy Wall Street movement began. Two-and-a-half years later, an Occupy movement succeeded on WWE Raw. Taking a page from the Chicago crowd trying to “Hijack Raw” last week, Daniel Bryan came out with a demand for Triple H. He wanted a match at WrestleMania. He said he would refuse to leave the ring until his demand was met, but unlike others who have made that threat, he had backup. In a visually striking scene, dozens of “fans” wearing Bryan shirts came out of the crowd, filling the ring and ringside area.

Monday night's Raw began with a well-executed angle and ended with a great match. What was in between was pretty good, too. When Chris Jericho came out to confront Stephanie McMahon at the top of the show, I never imagined it would result in Stephanie's firing Jericho. ( For more, go to baltimoresun.com/ringposts)

As the storyline of Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton and the WWE brass (Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, etc.) blossoms, we are seeing the "building heat" phase. The WWE Universe is developing more and more discontent toward the villain side of the equation, as the hero constantly gets one-upped and beaten down. Two weeks away from the next pay-per-view, Night of Champions, Bryan looks like he doesn't stand a chance.  This week's Raw ended the same way it has ended for the last few weeks -- with Randy Orton and the "corporation" standing tall over a lifeless "B+".

Today in Los Angeles, streamed worldwide via WWE's many web and app platforms (I watched on YouTube), WWE held a news conference in advance of Sunday's SummerSlam. This year marks the 26th edition of the event, with the past five held at the Staples Center. Triple H made remarks about that statistic, noting that SummerSlam has been sold out for the past five years at the home of the Lakers, Clippers and Kings. He also joked about being a special guest referee in Sunday's WWE title match between John Cena and Daniel Bryan.  "Nothing ever goes wrong in WWE when you have a special referee.

This year I've had the opporrtunity to enjoy all the action from Los Angeles in the days leading up to Summerslam 2012. Here are the tidbits I have collected from several WWE Superstars: Stephanie McMahon gives an interesting answer on whether or not she will return to WWE TV. Wade Barrett  says he is 99 percent healed from injury and details the character changes we can expect when he returns to WWE TV. Antonio Cesaro...

The first thing I saw when I pulled up to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando was a huge, professional-looking sign on the side of the building, signaling your welcome. "What a departure from typical wrestling schools," I thought, thinking back to schools that are often found in cheap rent commercial districts and almost always hard to find because no signs exist. This was obvious. There it was, in huge letters: "WWE Performance Center. " I knew I was in for something special. When I walked in the front door, I saw something that I believe has never existed in the pro wrestling industry: an enormous facility dedicated to the development of stars.

Professional wrestling legend Johnnie Mae Young has passed away at age 90. The announcement was made by WWE on Tuesday night (Jan. 14) and echoed on the Twitter account of the company's chief brand officer, Stephanie McMahon . "A true pioneer and legend has passed tonight.
