A 12-year-old girl who was sexually abused by her stepfather will receive $70,000 toward medical expenses under a settlement that ended aweeklong civil trial in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.The girl and her mother, formerly of Annapolis but now living in the Los Angeles area, agreed to the settlement Tuesday afternoon -- just beforea jury was to begin deliberations in the case. The mother had, on behalf of her daughter, filed a $6 million suit in December 1989 against the stepfather -- two months after the 39-year-old was convicted ofattempted rape, sexual child abuse and a third-degree sexual offense.

Tammy Crouse of Aberdeen was angry when she learned recently that her stepfather's conviction on charges of sexually abusing her between 1974 and 1982 had been overturned by the state Court of Special Appeals.She still is."I was the victim, and I have been paying for his crime for 19 years," said Miss Crouse, 28, who agreed to allow her name to be published.The Sun does not identify victims or alleged victims of sexual abuse crimes without their consent.A Harford Circuit Court jury convicted the stepfather in July 1993, but the decision was overturned June 8. The opinion was filed by Judge Glenn T. Harrell Jr. on behalf of an appellate panel that also included Theodore G. Bloom and Robert F. Fischer.

In Baltimore City Harford man sought in beating death of his stepdaughter, 3 A Harford County man was being sought yesterday in the death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter in Northeast Baltimore after an autopsy found it resulted from beating injuries, authorities said. According to police, the stepfather - a 21-year-old from Forest Hill whose name was not released - called 911 from the child's home in the 2500 block of Moore Ave. about 11:20 p.m. Sunday and said she was unresponsive. Police did not say whether he was in the house when officers arrived minutes later.
