For the better part of the past three years, Virginia enjoyed the rare luxury of knowing that the net on the defensive side of the field was filled by Adam Ghitelman. Ghitelman's nine-save performance in the national title game allowed him to ride off into the sunset with a NCAA crown - and left the Cavaliers with a decision to make regarding his successor. Coach Dom Starsia thinks he has found the right man in senior Rob Fortunato. “We feel like Rob Fortunato is the likely starter,” Starsia said.

When Maryland takes the field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis for Saturday's NCAA tournament quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 seed Johns Hopkins, Goran Murray will likely move to a spot opposite Zach Palmer and shadow the Blue Jays' junior attackman incessantly. That's been the role that the 6-foot, 175-pound defenseman has played in his freshman campaign. Having tangled with the likes of Virginia senior Steele Stanwick, Colgate junior Peter Baum, and Lehigh senior David DiMaria, being asked to contain an opponent's top attackman has become a matter of routine for Murray.

Tewaaraton Award finalist Steele Stanwick (Loyola) found Matt White for the game-winning goal 1:27 into the first overtime period to give No. 7 seed Virginia (10-5) a 13-12 victory over visiting Bucknell (14-3) on Sunday in the first round of the NCAA Division I men's lacrosse tournament. Bucknell took a 12-10 lead with 4:00 remaining on a goal by Peter Burke, but Stanwick scored twice in the final 2:32, once unassisted, then on a pass from Chris LaPierre. Stanwick tied his career highs with eight points and five assists.

Mike Sawyer would take the high road and never lower himself to criticize an individual achievement, but I think the Loyola junior attackman was snubbed in the voting for the Division I All-American first team. Colgate junior Peter Baum and Virginia senior Steele Stanwick were locks for the first team. It's the third spot occupied by Massachusetts junior Will Manny that is disputable. Statistically, Manny is the better all-around player, ranking third in the nation in points per game (4.8)

Under normal circumstances, Steele and Wells Stanwick would call each other and compare notes on games their respective men's lacrosse teams just played and offer advice on upcoming opposing defenses. This week, however, has been anything but normal. With Wells and No. 2 Johns Hopkins slated to visit Steele and No. 1 Virginia on Saturday, there hasn't been much conferring between the brothers. "This week, we haven't talked as in depth as we usually have," said Steele, the Cavaliers' top senior attackman.

Even a sore left hip won't prevent Steele Stanwick from making his customary start in Saturday's showdown between No. 1 Virginia and No. 2 Johns Hopkins. The senior attackman has been bothered by a hip injury that was most noticeable during the Cavaliers' 9-8 overtime win against Cornell at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic on March 10. The pain flares up occasionally as it did during practice Monday when he doubled over after scoring a goal. But Stanwick said the injury is not serious.
