Steele Stanwick led Loyola Blakefield to back-to-back Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championships in 2007-08 before doing the same for the University of Virginia this spring. On Thursday evening, the junior attackman from Roland Park garnered the sport's top individual honor as well, winning the coveted Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded annually to the top male collegiate lacrosse player. Stanwick becomes the third Cavalier and the first former Baltimore-area prep player to win the award since Friends School grad and Johns Hopkins senior midfielder Kyle Harrison was picked in 2005.

Virginia coach Dom Starsia has always hedged a little over talk of parity in college lacrosse, but he is slowly crossing over. Lacrosse is becoming more like the NFL. There are consistent winners every year, but the team that gets hot at the end has a good shot at winning the title. No. 3 Duke is on the comeback trail after a slow start. No. 12 Johns Hopkins had a strong rebound performance against Virginia a week ago. And the No. 13 Cavaliers (5-4) don't have a signature win all season.

With conference play heating up, and April - a month that's all about improvement - on the doorstep, I solicited questions on Twitter (@QKessenich) to see what's on people's minds.   National College Lacrosse League @NCLLax: If QK can change just one rule for 2013, what would he add or delete from the NCAA rulebook? QK: The No. 1 rule change on everybody's mind is the shot clock. Shot-clock advocates are growing, but change is a touchy subject. The rules committee works in a two-year cycle, and this offseason offers it the opportunity to enact reform.

The Loyola lacrosse team lost two of its first three games this season, but the Dons didn't lose perspective. When Virginia opened the season with four consecutive wins - including a 13-12 overtime decision over Drexel - the program appeared to have recovered from the graduation losses of attackmen Steele Stanwick and Chris Bocklet and midfielder Colin Briggs, defenseman Matt Lovejoy and goalkeeper Rob Fortunato. Since then, however, the No. 13 Cavaliers have dropped four of their past five games and their last three, including a 15-8 setback at the hands of No. 12 Johns Hopkins in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore Saturday.

Johns Hopkins has dominated this series, winning 53 of 82 contests and the last two. No. 13 Virginia (5-3) has dropped three of its last four games, but the offense ranks sixth in Division I in scoring with a 12.9 average. The Cavaliers have unearthed a quarterback in junior attackman Nick O'Reilly, who leads the team in assists (16) and points (30) after redshirting last season. The No. 12 Blue Jays are 5-2, but they are 0-2 against ranked opponents. Johns Hopkins boasts an offense tied for fourth in scoring and is getting plenty of possessions via senior faceoff specialist Mike Poppleton, who has won 71.1 percent (96-of-135)

When a program captured five national championships - most recently in 2011 - it's almost impossible to be ignored. But that's how Virginia has been feeling this season. Despite a 5-1 record, the No. 13 Cavaliers have been coasting through February and March without much media scrutiny or fanfare. And that doesn't bother coach Dom Starsia one bit. “This is a year in which we're better served to be able to work on ourselves for a while before we step out,” he said Friday morning.

The Orange has surrendered just 16 goals in two games this season, but can that retooled defense contain a Cavaliers offense headlined by reigning Tewaaraton Award winner Steele Stanwick (Loyola) and fellow senior attackman Chris Bocklet?
