I think Edith Bunker did more to liberate the caged American housewife than Betty Friedan ever did. The author of "The Feminine Mystique" is the one who identified the nameless dissatisfaction of women at home with the kids and the kitchen chores. But it was Archie Bunker's wife, Edith - so memorably portrayed by Jean Stapleton, who died last week at 90 - who brought it home, literally. "All in The Family" was the most popular show on network television for years in the 1970s - back in the days of appointment television, when families gathered together to watch their favorite shows.

When the noise and the pressure of life at the Naval Academy got to be a bit much, Tracy James, Lance Lesher, Norm Stapleton and Brendan Murphy had a significant advantage over their classmates. They could go home. The four, scheduled to graduate next week, grew up figuratively in the shadow of the chapel dome. They say being so close to home helped make life easier for them and for their friends. They could fill in for friends from far away who had drawn duty when they expected to be on vacation, recalled Lesher, of Severn.

If Eli S. Jacobs pays attention to recent media accounts and sells the Orioles to Cincinnati businessman William O. DeWitt Jr., he apparently will be turning over the owners' box to more than one investor from that Midwestern city.Joining DeWitt in his Orioles bid are three others who live in Cincinnati and, like DeWitt, own minority shares of the Texas Rangers -- businessmen Mercer Reynolds, Dudley Taft and Robert Castellini. The four investors, who are close friends, have been shopping for a baseball team for more than a year, said Craig Stapleton, a fellow partner in the Rangers group.

You'll have to excuse the fingerprints on the doors and hoods. There have been a lot of people wanting to see and touch the Saturn, General Motor's challenge to the foreign compact car market. The car was introduced to the Baltimore area at two dealerships that officially opened last week. So far, the crowds in the showrooms have surprised even the dealers, who have been suffering during the recent car slump."We are tickled to death," said Jerry Fader, a partner in the Saturn of Owings Mills dealership in the Heritage Auto Park on Reisterstown Road.

DENVER - Since 2002, more than 1,500 houses have sprouted on land that was once covered by runways from the earliest days of jet travel, as a 7.5-square- mile mixed-use development rises at the former Stapleton airport, about a 15-minute drive east of downtown Denver. Expected to have a population of 30,000 when completed about 2020, Stapleton is thought to be the largest project ever undertaken to fill in vacant or underused urban land. Set against a backdrop of the downtown skyline and the Front Range of the Rockies, the project has been widely praised as a model of "new urbanism."

NEW YORK - Sundown at the Stapleton Playground on Staten Island can seem an unremarkable tableau, at first blush not much more than a flurry of whistles and whoops and sweaty shins chasing a ball. Except here, on most days, a smattering of former child soldiers are likely to be on the soccer field, racing after the ball, but also chasing away memories of a gruesome civil war back home in Liberia. A former banker from Monrovia, the Liberian capital, may be standing on the sidelines, offering a tale of being tortured by a gang of rifle-toting teen-age rebels.

When you meet Ida Rollin, as depicted by Maureen Stapleton, you wonder how anyone under any circumstances could help this woman commit suicide. The job undertaken by "Last Wish" is to make you understand how not just anyone, but her own daughter, could do just that. The strength of the movie is that as it makes you understand that decision, it does not try to persuade you that it was right."Last Wish," a superbly acted and directed ABC movie that will be on Channel 13 (WJZ) Sunday night at 9 o'clock, is based on the book by Betty Rollin, the former television reporter whose battle with breast cancer was dramatized in the TV film "First, You Cry," also from her book by that name.

Show house makes magazine coverIt's rare when an interior designer gets the chance to be both designer and client at the same time.Dvorine and Associates in Brooklandville had that opportunity last year when the firm designed a suite for the Baltimore Symphony Decorators' Show House. The design was so effective that it landed the suite on the cover of the spring issue of Decorating magazine."It was one of our most successful projects because we were able to indulge ourselves by being our own client," said Arleen Dvorine.

DENVER -- Beneath a gleaming white roof sculpted with a fiberglass fabric to resemble the distant Rocky Mountains, custodians vacuum the carpets and clean the windows of the cavernous airport terminal.Baggage is stacked at ticket counters and, outside three giant concourses, workers lug heavy equipment across the concrete. It could be a typical scene at any busy terminal, except that a few essentials are missing here at Denver International Airport. There are no planes in the air or on the ground.
