The power, size and speed of the Henry A. Wise football team ended Meade's dream season with a nightmare. After two surprising road playoff victories over then-No. 4 Arundel and then-No. 6 Old Mill, No. 5 Meade hoped to keep rolling in the Class 4A state semifinal Saturday afternoon. But Wise used its bulk to take control early and steamroll the visiting Mustangs, 40-0. Wise (13-0) advances to the Class 4A state final Friday at M&T Bank Stadium against Quince Orchard, who edged No. 3 Westminster, 21-19, in the other state semifinal Friday night.

This is not at all how Maryland hoped to send off its 17 seniors - mired in a four-game losing streak and trying to make a final stand in a season characterized by injuries and two particularly wrenching losses. After Maryland went 2-10 last season, senior starters Joe Vellano, A.J. Francis , Kenneth Tate, Kevin Dorsey and others imagined that their final seasons would coincide with a turnaround performance punctuated by a bowl game. But if college is partly about learning life lessons, then this year's was that things don't always go as expected.

Since making his stunning comeback from a partially torn right Achilles tendon suffered in April, Terrell Suggs has totaled eight tackles, one sack and one batted pass in two games. But both of those games were on the road against the Houston Texans on Oct. 21 and the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. So the outside linebacker and reigning NFL Defensive Player of Year could expect a raucous reception when he steps onto the field at M&T Bank Stadium this Sunday for the first time in 2012.

The Ravens may not have an explanation, but they have certainly ruled some things out. Weather? The Ravens played on beautiful afternoons in Philadelphia, Kansas City and Houston. Playing field? All three games were on grass, the same surface the Ravens practice on. Travel plans? The Ravens essentially have stuck to the same schedule that they used from 2008 to 2010, when they won four road playoff games under coach John Harbaugh. "We've looked at it all," Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said.

Returning to Cleveland may be a bittersweet memory for Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome and several other employees who worked for the franchise under its previous incarnation as the Browns. For Morgan Cox, the trip is memorable for a different reason. On Dec. 26, 2010, the long snapper tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while blocking on Billy Cundiff's 27-yard field goal in the second quarter en route to an eventual Ravens' 20-10 win. Fortunately for Cox, he hasn't allowed the memory of that injury to seep into his consciousness when returning to Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Morgan State watched Bethune-Cookman start to unravel early in the second quarter of Saturday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup even though the Wildcats had a three-point lead at the time. After defensive back Dion Hanks was ejected for striking a Morgan State player, Wildcats coach Brian Jenkins was also kicked out of the game seconds later for berating the officials. The NCAA does not officially track ejections, but at least three NCAA representatives said Jenkins could be the first head football coach ever ejected from a game.

In their previous four seasons, the Ravens could count on three things when traveling to Cleveland to take on the Browns: unpleasant weather, opportunities to run the football and a victory over their AFC North rivals. The Ravens, who haven't lost to the Browns since John Harbaugh became head coach in 2008, have averaged 193 rushing yards per game in their last four trips to Cleveland Browns Stadium. Sure, that number is inflated a bit by their 290 rushing yards in a 24-10 win in Cleveland last December.
