Springdale surged to the front turning for home before going on to a 3 3/4 -length victory in the $20,000 feature at Pimlico Race Course yesterday.The 3-year-old filly was the first starter at Pimlico for Larry Jennings since the trainer shipped his stable to Pimlico from Monmouth Park.After breaking sharply, Springdale was taken back by Mike Luzzi. She then angled out for the stretch drive and was able to hold off a mild rally from Pandisco.Springdale, an easy winner of her last start at Philadelphia Park, paid $7.60 to win after completing 1 1/16 miles in 1 minute, 45 1/5 seconds.

On February 24, 2009, GEORGE DENSIL DEITZ, 80, after a yearlong struggle from the effects of a stroke. He was the son of the late Dudley Deitz and Virginia Nicely. George was born on January 2, 1929 in Greenbrier, WV, and moved to Baltimore, MD, in the early 50s until he retired to WV in 1983 and lived his remaining years. He was employed by American Standard in MD and Kentucky, retiring in 1987. Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife of 58 years, Hallena Deitz; devoted father of daughter Sandra Cook, her husband Ron Cook and loving "Pop Pop" to his grandson Keith Cook of Joppa, MD. Also loved by his extended family, friends and members of the Springdale Church of Christ, where he ministered and served the Lord for over 20 years.

The New Windsor Town Council has voted to annex the land on which the Brethren Service Center plans to build a retirement village.The council had stalled on the issue of extending the town limits to include the 6.63-acre parcel, which lies along Springdale Road.Council members were concerned that the Heifer Project International animal barn on the property would violate a town law that prohibits raising farm animals within town limits.But Town Attorney Marker J. Lovell told the council at its Wednesday night meeting that the land could be annexed to the town without violating the law because the agricultural use of the land was permitted before the land became part of the town.

SPRINGDALE, Ark. - For nearly two decades, John Moody made his living killing, gutting and packing poultry on the line at Tyson Foods, the nation's largest meat producer and processor. It was unpleasant work - smelly, repetitive and dangerous. He severed the tip of his index finger on a factory saw. Moody was paid $3.25 an hour when he started there in the early 1980s, and made $7.99 when he left in 1995. But for someone who grew up in the poverty-ridden Marshall Islands, coming to America and working in even a menial job opened "a door of opportunity," he said.

Springdale's Amanda White broke Polly Winde's 11-year-old record in the girls' 15-18 100-yard individual medley during the Central Maryland Swim League Championships yesterday at Padonia.White, a Dulaney High School athlete and the Baltimore Sun High School Athlete of the Year for her track and swimming accomplishments, was clocked in 1 minute, 7.83 seconds. That eclipsed by .07 of a second the record set in 1981 by Winde, who three years later came within an eyelash of making the U.S. Olympic team.

.. Princess C. Samuels wanted to see the world. The 22-year-old enlisted in the Army after she graduated in 2003 from Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, Prince George's County. "We just wanted to see the world and go to school and just get out of Maryland," said Senior Airman Jacqueline "Nikki" Ellis in an interview from Anderson Air Force Base in Guam. The two lived together like sisters during high school. "We saw so many people that just stayed in there and never do anything else," she said.

SPRINGDALE -- Faced with the task of beating a quality team a second time in nine days, the St. Frances girls basketball team couldn't find an answer against D.C.-area power Holy Cross in last night's International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Christmas Tournament championship game at C.H. Flowers High School. The Tartans, ranked third by The Washington Post, led from the opening possession, built a 14-point lead in the second quarter and had an answer every time the No. 1 Panthers got close to come away with a 62-51 win. Deron Keith Hemsley, a graduate of Chesapeake High School in Anne Arundel County and sports fan, died Sept. 21 at Prince George's Hospital Center of injuries suffered in an automobile accident 10 days earlier in Upper Marlboro. He was 19. Mr. Hemsley was born in Baltimore and raised in Pasadena. He was a 2004 graduate of Chesapeake High, where he played basketball and football. A resident of Springdale in Prince George's County for about a year, he had been working as a painter and landscaper and had attended Prince George's Community College.
