The former Gladys Spellman Specialty Hospital and Nursing Center, located for 43 years adjacent to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, has moved to Laurel Regional Hospital and has a new name. The Gladys Spellman Specialty Care Unit, or GSSCU, on the fourth-floor of Laurel Regional Hospital received patients transferred from the old facility June 30. The new unit has 46 licensed specialty care beds and offers comprehensive care for adults whose health care needs require more than what can be provided in a home environment or a nursing home.

An Elkton woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for exploiting an elderly man and obtaining property through a theft scheme, authorities said. Tara Timing Spellman, 45, picked up a 78-year-old Havre de Grace man with heart problems and the onset of dementia and drove him to a branch of the Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union. She represented herself as Phillip Ficken's granddaughter to obtain a loan in his name in 2006, according to Bill Christoforo, Harford County assistant state's attorney.

A 30-year-old Westminster woman was sentenced to 10 years in prison for setting fire to her apartment in Taneytown, causing $257,000 in damage to the building. Carroll Circuit Judge Michael M. Galloway found Tammy Spellman of the 100 block of E. Main St. guilty of three counts of first-degree arson and one count of reckless endangerment in connection with the fire at 40 E. Baltimore St. on Aug. 1, 1998. "The callous disregard for the people living in this building is just mind-boggling," Galloway said.

LAST WEEK, columnist Jacques Kelly mentioned how "Washingtonians get a twitchy feeling when they spot the Gladys Noon Spellman Memorial sign" on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. I wonder how many motorists buzzing by that sign designating the 38-mile stretch of road, the Gladys Noon Spellman Parkway, remember or have even heard of the Maryland congresswoman for whom it presumably honors. Just this week, Richard Rothstein, writing in The New York Times, lamented that many of today's students are "woefully ignorant of history," and cites a 1999 survey that asked college students who commanded our nation's forces at the Battle of Yorktown.

University of Pennsylvania-bound midfielders Pat Connaly and Ethan Haire are among seven St. Paul's lacrosse players who have committed to play that sport in college.The others are midfielders Ben Bartlett (Lehigh) and Ben Cusson (Penn State), attackman Conor Ford (Johns Hopkins), goalkeeper Paul Spellman (Cornell) and defender Jon Berrier (Harvard), the latter of whom also will play football.
