The Federal Highway Administration is working to correct road settlement on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Prince George's County. One lane on the northbound and southbound sides of the parkway at the Route 197 interchange is likely to be closed this week. Closures will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. southbound through Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. northbound through Friday; and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. in both directions Saturday. Delays should be expected southbound below Route 198 and northbound above the Capital Beltway.

One person was killed and four others were injured when a car traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 during last night's rain collided with a van in the Savage area, state police said. The male driver of a 1991 Honda CRX left a rest area near Route 32 on the southbound entrance ramp about 9:30 p.m. and was in the fast lane when he collided head-on with a van occupied by four people near Vollmerhausen Road, police said. The driver of the Honda died at the scene. The others were taken to Howard County General Hospital with injuries that did not appear life-threatening, police said.

The State Highway Administration has completed the first part of its project to improve the Baltimore Beltway and Liberty Road interchange. A newly widened exit ramp from southbound Interstate 695 to Liberty Road - also known as Route 26 - opened last week. Drivers can travel east or west on Liberty Road from the ramp. The modifications are part of a nearly two-year, $4.5 million SHA project to improve safety and traffic flow in the interchange, and it is scheduled to be completed next summer, according to the agency.

Successive accidents last night involving three tractor-trailer rigs and numerous other vehicles shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the Baltimore Beltway near White Marsh, state police reported. Police at the Kennedy Highway barracks closed the southbound lanes shortly before 9 p.m. after the separate crashes, which took place several minutes apart. Police said the second collision occurred as motorists tried to avoid the first crash site. Injuries were reported as minor.

Traffic patterns on southbound Interstate 97 at Route 100 will change tomorrow.Motorists who have been using exit lanes on the left to eastbound Route 100 will exit from the right lanes, starting about 8 p.m. Drivers continuing south toward Annapolis will use the left lanes.In addition, the one-lane ramps from eastbound and westbound Route 176 to southbound Interstate 97 will be closed at 7 p.m. The lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday.

An unidentified man jumped over the retaining wall of southbound Interstate 95 in East Baltimore and fell about 25 feet onto heavily traveled eastbound Pulaski Highway, disrupting rush-hour traffic yesterday evening. The man, who was not struck by any vehicles, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was admitted at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, said Cpl. Greg Prioleau, a spokesman for Maryland Transportation Authority Police. Prioleau said a transportation authority officer was talking to the pedestrian on the southbound shoulder of I-95 about 4:45 p.m. when the man suddenly turned and jumped over the retaining wall.

In Baltimore City Two accidents close JFX; officer treated for injuries Two related accidents yesterday on the southbound Jones Falls Expressway north of 28th Street closed the interstate briefly, backing up traffic and slightly injuring a police officer. About 8:30 a.m., a southbound vehicle slid on wet pavement onto the left shoulder and safety barrier, blocking one lane. Another southbound driver braked suddenly, skidding his 1994 Toyota into a parked police car. The entire southbound side was then closed.

The State Highway Administration will detour and shift traffic today and Saturday in Glen Burnie because of construction on two ramps connecting Route 174 to Interstate 97, and a third ramp connecting southbound I-97 to Route 100.Today, motorists will use a new ramp to reach southbound I-97 from Route 174, or Quarterfield Road. Also, motorists trying to get to Business Route 3 will be connected directly to it via Route 174. These changes will remain in effect until the end of next month.On Saturday, motorists southbound on I-97 will enter Route 174 on a new ramp about 2,000 feet north of the existing ramp.
