Most pianists do not bring a string quartet half-way across the country at their own expense simply because they feel like playing Brahms. But then most pianists are not like Alexander -- "Lexo" to his friends -- Toradze.Baltimore music lovers are still talking about his take-no-prisoners performances of Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 3 with the Baltimore Symphony last season. Toradze expanded the scope of the piece dramatically, transforming what is usually a velvety-sounding virtuoso concerto into something resembling a piano vs. orchestra Armageddon.

South Bend, Ind. -- Victor Abiamiri and Ambrose Wooden came here from Baltimore four years ago hoping to find the kind of success at Notre Dame that they had at the Gilman School, where as seniors they led the football team to an undefeated season and a No. 1 ranking in the state. Returning today to play in their hometown for the first time when the 11th-ranked Fighting Irish meet Navy at M&T Bank Stadium, Abiamiri and Wooden find themselves in different situations in their college careers.

Brian Kelly will be introduced today as the next Notre Dame coach. He will, of course, instantly be ordained a savior, though he'll do well to just be Brian Kelly, with the peak-volume personality and production that suggests. He is a championship-program craftsman. Like Edsall, Brian Kelly came to a more high-profile position - in the case of Notre Dame, one of the most highly-scrutinized in the country - after having success at a Big East school. And, as Edsall has already experienced in his first 10 months in College Park, many wondered if Kelly was the right man for the job. Some still do. Though recent victories over Navy and Wake Forest have helped soften the mood since Kelly - like Edsall - questioned the level of talent he inherited in South Bend from Charlie Weis when he was hired before last season, the coach who built Cincinnati and two smaller programs into perennial winners believes it is part of the transition most coaches go through when changing jobs.
