Soroptimist International of Havre de Grace, presenter of the 50th annual Havre de Grace Art Show, has announced the winner of the poster contest for original art created to highlight this year's event. Michael McMillion, of Bel Air, was presented an award of $300 by Soroptimist Club member and chairman of the Art Show, Cindy Height, for his entry. Soroptimist International expresses thanks to those who participated in the contest. The Havre de Grace Art Show has a call to entry for this year's show with a deadline of April 15. Proceeds from the show benefit scholarships and community service.

Soroptimist International of Havre de Grace recently met with the Community Projects of Havre de Grace Committee to complete the final payment of their 10-year pledge to the James Harris Stadium project. In 2002, a discussion between Jean Royster, then president of Soroptimists, and Steve William, principal of Havre de Grace High School, resulted in the Soroptimist Club pledging $10,000 toward construction of the stadium. The James Harris Stadium has been an ongoing community project embraced by local people, organizations and businesses to construct an outstanding facility in memory of James Harris, former athletic director at Havre de Grace High.

Soroptimist International will hold a Wine Tasting and Art Sale Fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at 10451 Twin Rivers Road. Admission is $10 per person. Soroptimist International of Howard County is part of an international volunteer service organization for business and professional women that works to improve the lives of women and girls.

Annual award provides a cash grant to a woman head-of-household who needs financial assistance to go back to school to obtain additional education, job skills and training. The money may be used for any cost associated with continuing education, including books, child care and transportation. `Business Basics for Nonprofits' to start in Feb. The Association of Community Services and the Business Resource Center of the Howard County Economic Development Authority are offering "Business Basics for Nonprofits." The three-part series is scheduled to begin next month and will focus on office space, hiring and marketing issues. It is open to ACS members. Conducted by professionals in their fields, all sessions will be held at the Center for Business and Technology Development, 9250 Bendix Road North off Route 108 in Columbia.

Everyday scenes of Havre de Grace will be the subject of the plein air paintings created by artists selected to compete in the second annual Havre de Grace Plein Air Painting Competition from Wednesday through Saturday. The competition is sponsored by Soroptimist International of Havre de Grace. En plein air is a French expression meaning "in the open air," used to describe painting in an outside environment rather than in a studio. Artists were selected to compete by juror Jacqueline Baldini of Niagara Falls, Ontario, director and founder of the International Plein Air Painting Organization.

Aberdeen resident Christina Rumbaugh, 48, has been involved with Soroptimist International of the Americas since she was about 10 years old. Back then, she would tag along with her mother, Jean Royster, a member of the Havre de Grace chapter of the nonprofit organization. After Rumbaugh graduated from Towson University and became a working woman herself, "She roped me into the group," Rumbaugh said of her mother. These days, both women belong to that Havre de Grace chapter, which has about 30 members.
