When attackman Stephen Banick broke his left leg in Stevenson's loss to Salisbury in an NCAA tournament semifinal on May 20 and then sustained an unrelated, undisclosed injury in the preseason that will likely force him to miss the current campaign, the door appeared to be open for sophomore Pat Candon to assert himself as a starter. But Candon has started just twice as junior Chris Dashiell has moved from the midfield and sophomore Mark Pannenton has transferred from SUNY-Cortland to join senior Tyler Reid as the starting attackmen.

Taylor Cook and Nate Babcock may not be St. Mary's most dangerous midfielders, but they are the team's most athletic. And the Seahawks have enjoyed a three-game winning streak despite the pair's absence. Coach Chris Hasbrouck said Babcock, a sophomore, has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms. The Baltimore and Severn native recorded six goals and two assists in six games, but the concussion-like symptoms raised a red flag. “In today's day and age, you have to be careful with a concussion,” Hasbrouck said.

Stephen Banick has yet to play in a game this season for Stevenson, and it appears that his absence will extend for the remainder of the year. The sophomore attackman suffered an injury in the preseason unrelated to the left leg that he broke in the Mustangs' loss to Salisbury in the semifinal round of the 2012 NCAA tournament on May 20. Coach Paul Cantabene said Thursday morning that sitting the rest of the season and applying for a medical redshirt...

It was almost a year ago - 363 days, to be exact - but it seems like eons now. John Ranagan fired home a low, bouncing shot with 5.6 seconds left in overtime to give Johns Hopkins an exhilarating 11-10 win over then-No. 1 Virginia, extend the Blue Jays' start to 8-0 and vault them to the top of The Baltimore Sun poll. Since then, however, the goals and late-game heroics have not been as frequent for Ranagan. As the midfielder embarks on the second half of his senior year with the Blue Jays, Ranagan is acutely aware of the expectations that have dogged him since he was named a first-team All-American in 2011.

In eight games this season, Towson has started junior Thomas DeNapoli and sophomore Cory Dobyns on attack. The third attackman spot has been more of a revolving door. Five players have started as the third attackman. Sophomore Justin Mabus has made the most starts (three), and senior Matt Hughes, junior Paul Danko Jr., and freshman Brian Bolewicki have each had a turn. Junior Devin Grimaldi was the latest candidate to get a shot at playing with DeNapoli and Dobyns. He finished 0-of-1 from the field, grabbed six ground balls, committed three turnovers and caused one turnover in the Tigers' 12-4 loss to No. 20 Duke on Saturday.

UMBC has split its last two contests, and the starting goalkeeper for both games has been sophomore Wes DiRito. DiRito was on the losing end of a 13-7 setback to Johns Hopkins on March 8, but the Odenton native who graduated from DeMatha earned his first career victory as the Retrievers battered High Point, 16-11, last Saturday. DiRito succeeded senior Adam Cohen, who started the first four contests of the season en route to a 13.33 goals-against average and a .412 save percentage.

Maryland center Alex Len said it's too early to say whether he will return for his junior season or opt for the NBA draft. “No, I haven't thought about it,” the seven-footer from Ukraine said after the Terps practiced at Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum for Thursday night's ACC tournament game against Wake Forest. “I'm just trying to go ahead day by day and play every game. Right now, I'm focused on Wake Forest and I'm just going to think about it after the season.” Len is averaging 11.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
