A Lothian man, who would have turned 60 today, was killed yesterday afternoon after the pickup truck he was driving on Solomons Island Road in Harwood left the roadway and crashed into a tree, county police said.Officer John Brothers, an accident investigator, said Charles Bernard Sesker of the 5000 block of Sands Road was driving a 1969 Ford pickup truck south on Solomons Island Road near Harwood Drive about 1: 26 p.m. when the truck left the roadway for no apparent reason and struck a tree.

New shuttle service to link BWI and Solomons Island A new shuttle service will begin offering transportation between Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Solomons Island today. The shuttle is a partnership between Friendly Cab and Smart Ride. The service is scheduled to run from BWI to the Holiday Inn Select in Solomons three times a day. Information or reservations: Friendly Cab, 301-863-8141. Construction to close part of lower-level sidewalk As part of BWI's terminal curbside expansion and skywalk project, the lower-level sidewalk on the north side of the airport's hourly parking garage will be closed.

County and Annapolis police arrested Wednesday an Annapolis man they believe is the note-carrying robber who held up four stores in two jurisdictions over five days.George H. Brown Jr., 29, of the 1800 block of Bowman Drive in Annapolis was charged with four counts of armed robbery. He was being held at the county Detention Center without bail.In each incident, the robber walked into a store and handed a clerk a note demanding money, then drew a gun if the clerk did not comply, police said.

A Mayo man was killed yesterday morning in a traffic accident on Solomons Island Road and Virginia Avenue in Edgewater, county police said.Leonard James Brown, 73, of the 4100 block of Shoreham Beach Road was southbound on Solomons Island Road shortly before 5:30 a.m., police said. He drove his 1990 Mercury Topaz onto the right shoulder of the road and plowed into a garbage truck that had stopped to pick up some trash, police said.The three men in the truck were not injured, police said. The garbage truck is owned by Superior Refuse Inc. in Pasadena, police said.

Hearing held on recycling plant Representatives for A-A Recycle & Sand asked Anne Arundel County's administrative hearing officer yesterday for permission to continue operating a wood-waste recycling plant in Pasadena. The hearing came four days after A-A Recycle's owner, William H. DeBaugh Jr., and the Lake Waterford Community Association Inc. signed a covenant that would limit the plant's hours of operation and provide additional landscaping buffers to shield nearby homes from dust, noise and odor.

...TC An employee at a Solomons Island Road doll shop reported that a woman stole a limited-edition doll worth $500 to $700 Tuesday night while an accomplice distracted other workers, county police said.Lynn Phillips, 44, who works at Poppets in the 2500 block of Solomons Island Road, told police a man and a woman entered the store about 7:30 p.m. and stayed 20 to 30 minutes.The man made a layaway payment on a doll while the woman looked at dolls in the front of the store. The cashier became distracted while helping the man complete the sales ticket.

EDGEWATER -- A 32-year-old Edgewater man died yesterday evening at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center from injuries after he was struck by a car while attempting to cross an intersection near the Lee Airport, Anne Arundel County police said.The man, Todd Duane Richards, 32, of the 300 block of Salisbury Road, was pronounced dead shortly before 6 p.m. from head and internal injuries and fractured legs.Police said Mr. Richards was crossing Solomons Island Road just north of Mayo Road around 9:30 a.m. yesterday against the red light and not in a pedestrian crosswalk when he was struck by a 1984 Nissan Sentra driven north on Solomons Island Road by Katherine Mary Gilberto, age unknown, of the 7000 block of Woodyard Road in Upper Marlboro.

Kenneth Tenore, a coastal ecologist who was a proponent of environmental ethics, died of acute pancreatitis Sunday at University of Maryland Medical Center. He was 63 and a resident of Hollywood in St. Mary's County. For the past two decades, until he stepped down last year, Dr. Tenore had been director of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Chesapeake Biological Laboratory on Solomons Island. He was an expert on decaying bay grasses and their role in feeding crabs and marine worms.

Traffic was snarled around Annapolis yesterday after a construction crew accidentally severed a natural-gas line just south of the busy interchange of Solomons Island Road and Aris T. Allen Boulevard, Anne Arundel fire officials said. The backup began about 8:25 a.m. when workers from Schummer Inc., an Edgewater utility company, cut through the plastic pipe while installing a water line along Solomons Island Road near Grand Oak Drive, said Capt. Lee Cornwell, spokesman for the county Fire Department.
