Katrina Marinelli swung for the fences and got all ball. "Nice hit," said a teammate. It wasn't really a hit. The 12-year-old Roland Park girl was hitting a softball off a tee into a net during practice, as the Rams, a newly formed girls softball team at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School, prepared for an April 8 away game against Dumbarton Middle School in Rodgers Forge. Coaches and parents who organized the team say it's the first girls softball team at the school in many years, if not ever, and a rarity in the budget-conscious Baltimore Public School System, where middle school softball is considered a luxury.

When Ebony Johnson learned that she and her softball team would spend MLB All-Star Week in Minneapolis, she admitted to being a little more excited than her players. "They're just 11 and 12 years old," she said. "So many of them haven't left the city. Some of them haven't left the state. Some of them have never flown before. But they are very excited about it. " Johnson coaches the 12-and-under softball team affiliated with the Orioles' Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program, a youth outreach initiative that promotes interest in baseball.

Sophomore second baseman Allison Borchers doesn't act or talk like a superstar for the Delaware softball team. "I'm not trying to go out and be amazing," said Borchers, who was a first-team All-Metro choice at Fallston High. "Or be like the only player on the team. Coach [B.J. Ferguson] has me as leadoff batter just to get on base and help the team win." Borchers is not only fulfilling Ferguson's expectations, as the team is off to an 18-8 start, but she is leads the Blue Hens in nearly every important offensive category.

All preseason signs indicated that Atholton's softball team would be one of the county's most improved teams. The Raiders returned eight starters from a team that won its final three games in 1992 to finish third in the county.Still, Atholton's 3-0 start rates as a big surprise. And after Atholton whipped perennial front-runner Glenelg on Monday, 8-1, the Raiders probably won't be viewed as an up-and-coming team any longer. It marked the first time Atholton had beaten Glenelg in four seasons.
