In 13 years as the varsity softball coach at North Carroll High School, Lloyd Ford has guided the Panthers to a 202-80 record and three appearances in the state finals. It seemed only a matter of time before he would earn a major coaching award. It came earlier this month when Ford was named the 2012 Maryland State Softball Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Coaches Association. The NHFS Coaches Awards Program honors active coaches in the top 10 boys and girls sports, based on the number of participants.

Meyers and his team not only did not back down from their goal of winning the program's first state title, he also put together one of the most challenging schedules in the area. The Mavericks responded each game, finishing the season 25-0 and winning the Class 2A state championship. Eastern Tech became the first Baltimore County school since Overlea in 1981 to win a state championship. Meyers has been building up the program for several years. The Mavericks have won four out of five regional titles and four straight county championships.

Chris Szocik set the tone for his team to play hard to the end, and that resulted in Liberty winning its first state championship with a 3-2 victory over McDonough in the Class 2A title game. Rebecca Oneto tied the game in the ninth with a single up the middle. Sammy Bost then stole third and home after the third baseman missed the tag for a walk-off victory. "Our goal was to win the county title, but we knew we had a shot to go farther and we understood that anything can happen on a given day," Szocik said.

Harford Community College has been gearing up for the fall sports season. Here's a peek at the women's and men's soccer teams. The college has also named a new softball coach. Women's soccer A seven-win, four-tie campaign might not qualify as disappointing to most teams, but the Harford women's soccer program does not qualify as most teams. Under the guidance of 10-year head coach Jason Muffoletto, the Fighting Owls have finished in the top 10 in the nation numerous times, including a No. 4 finish in 2011.

Pete Waskiewicz Mount de Sales In his 19th season coaching the Sailors, Waskiewicz led them to their third conference championship (and second Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title). Mount de Sales won the Catholic League championship in 1998 and IAAM A Conference title in 2004, when Waskiewicz was honored as All-Baltimore City/County Coach of the Year. This season, the No. 2 Sailors finished 17-4 overall and 16-1 in the IAAM A Conference.

Lloyd Ford has been named softball coach at North Carroll, a school official announced yesterday.Athletic Director Bill Rumbaugh said Ford, the school's junior varsity softball coach for several years, replaces Rich Harvey, who has taken a teaching position at a high school in southern Pennsylvania."

If Chuck Struhar didn't teach English every day at Glenelg High School, he probably would be content to spend the day talking about softball.Since taking over the softball program at Glenelg three years ago, Struhar has turned Glenelg into a county powerhouse and a perennial playoff team. A knowledgeable, enthusiastic, demanding coach, Struhar prides himself on teaching fundamentals, drilling his players on game situations and turning marginal players into genuine talents.That may be a line out of every coach's handbook, but Struhar keeps producing the most impressive examples -- like Lisa Martin, a natural infielder who became one of the county's most dependable pitchers over the last two seasons.

Severna Park softball coach Duane McAlister has resigned effective Saturday. McAlister is in his third season with the No. 5 Falcons, but has to give up coaching because of his commitment to his full-time job."Duane works for General Motors and had been able to get off afternoons the past couple years, but it doesn't look like he can continue doing that," said Severna Park athletic director Wayne Mook.Mook said that assistant coach Jeff Shepherd might serve on an interim basis or "maybe I will have to come out of retirement."

Lynn Pitonzo announced yesterday that she will not return this spring as softball coach at Northeast High School, ending one of the most successful tenures in state history.In 14 seasons, Pitonzo's teams won nine regional and seven Class 2A state championships. The Eagles also put together a 64-game winning streak, fourth-longest in the nation, that concluded with a 4-3, 16-inning loss to Glen Burnie in April 1991.She leaves with a 238-55 career record, and no regrets."I decided that this was the right time, and it's now or never," she said.

"I volunteered to be president when the first one stepped down, and I've been doing it ever since." Also coaches two teams and expects to coach an under-16 tournament team after high school play ends. Jackie Boswell, who kept Seton Keough among the region's most powerful high school girls basketball teams over the past 11 years, is taking over the women's basketball program at Stevenson. Boswell, who was 238-81 in 11 seasons as head coach at Seton Keough, led the Gators to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A championship in 2009. In that year, the team won the ESPNRise National Invitational tournament championship and the prestigious Bishop Walsh tournament and finished ranked No. 12 in the ESPN Rise Girls Basketball rankings.

Harford Tech softball coach Fred Mongan took a big gamble in last week's Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference championship game with No. 4 C. Milton Wright. Mongan had scouted the Mustangs and talked with an opposing coach before deciding to start No. 2 pitcher Amy Hamilton. He planned to give her two innings, possibly three, and then bring in the harder-throwing Katie Irwin - a strategy designed to throw off the C. Milton Wright batters' timing. The gamble paid off. Hamilton gave up two runs over the first two innings, but Irwin (11-2)

Former Brooklyn Park baseball standout Bobby Boyd, who pitched professionally, has been named softball coach at North County. Brian Love, last year's Sun Metro Coach of the Year, led the Knights to a 19-4 record and their first state softball crown in Class 4A. Love resigned his softball post, which he had held for six seasons, after taking an administrative position at Chesapeake. The new coach inherits junior pitching ace Brittany Boyd, his daughter and one of three returning first- or second-team All-Metro selections.
