For the past nine months, Smokehouse Restaurant's liquor license has languished in the Carroll County Office Building.Although the liquor board approved Richard and Dorothy Mollett's application in August, the owners have yet to pick up XTC the license, administrator Ron Lau told board members yesterday.Smokehouse is located on the grounds of Antrim, a Taneytown bed-and-breakfast inn."We gave them 45 days from the hearing [to pick up the license] and then two extensions," Mr. Lau said. "The last extension ran out in April."

Smoke 'em if you got 'em. That might as well be the motto of the team at Annapolis Smokehouse & Tavern, the year-old restaurant where the smoke master tinkers with everything from fruit to duck. Opened in the Bay Ridge Shopping Center in December 2012, Annapolis Smokehouse is a fun place to hang out - the staff is friendly, and during our visit the bar was crowded from the time we got there until we left, when a band was busy setting up for the evening. But the real reason to visit is the smoky, interesting food.

SILVER BAY, Minn. -- The aroma came wafting around the corner of Charlie Tormondson's house.Smoke.Thick, slow-moving, pungent smoke.It was coming from a maroon cubicle the size of a small telephone booth: Charlie Tormondson's smokehouse. Inside, a smoldering maple fire was doing good things to 30 or 40 herring fillets and several lake trout steaks.Tormondson, 73, opened one of the smokehouse's plywood doors to have a look and a sniff. The herring fillets, lying on Tormondson's homemade chicken-wire shelves, were turning a delicious smudgy gold.

Europeans would have a laugh at our expense over what we consider an old structure. Nevertheless, Monkton's Stone Haven Farm, owned by Dan Saffer and his wife, JoAnne Duffy, had been standing for eight years when Handel's "Messiah" was first performed. The home's rugged stones braved winter two decades before the signing of the Declaration of Independence and years before Baltimore City became incorporated. By American standards, it's really quite old. A long narrow lane off a main road in northern Baltimore County leads to a circular stone wall, inside of which are a fountain, trees and myriad poinsettias.

Maybe they were desperate for Carolina-style pulled pork or St. Louis-style ribs. Or maybe they had heard about the 32 taps and the new bourbon bar inside Kloby's Smokehouse in Laurel. But at the exact moment Kloby's owners Michele and Steve Klobosits got the last of their approvals and were allowed to open their doors, a group of 40 people was waiting outside — one group of 40 people. The Klobositses were ready for them. It takes a lot to ruffle Michele Klobosits, who sounded serene and calm about opening her family's expanded barbecue restaurant on the Fourth of July weekend.

In the age of high-octane gaming consoles such as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, arcade games can seem almost prehistoric. But one addictive arcade brand still attracts and connects a large following in bars across the country: Golden Tee. When the first Golden Tee Live came out in 2005, it allowed gamers to link up to a global network and play golf against each other for money. It fostered a community of arcade gamers who played together in bars -- not alone in front of TVs. That sense of camaraderie is one of the game's draws, said Dan Schrementi, a marketing associate for Golden Tee parent company Incredible Technologies Inc. "With Golden Tee in general, even though you're connected in that online community, it's a social experience," Schrementi said.

MY BROTHER Eddie looked a little perplexed. Should he retire his 1984 dishwasher and buy a replacement? Or should he have it repaired and try to keep it for another 10 years, the way any good, thrifty Baltimorean would do? After all, he's living in a very pleasant house his great-grandfather built in 1881. Time sometimes only improves the chattels of this world. The dishwasher conversation took place on Thanksgiving afternoon in the warm and cozy kitchen of my family's Guilford Avenue home.

A lot of people think of barbecue and ice cream as strictly seasonal treats. Not so, say the regulars at Kloby's Smokehouse in North Laurel. From a counter-service barbecue joint that opened in April 2008, Kloby's has pretty much doubled in size so that it is now a full-service restaurant that can seat 150. And it now specializes not only in barbecue but in bourbon. And beer. And bread pudding. And ice cream. The new Kloby's began operations in June, after extensive renovations.

There's news out of Taneytown. The Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel has announced that Spencer Wolff is the new executive chef at its Smokehouse Restaurant. Wolff replaces Michael Gettier, who left his position at the country house hotel earlier this fall. Gettier is remembered by Baltimore diners for his Fells Point restaurant, M. Gettier, and its follow-up, M. Gettier's Orchard Inn in Towson. Gettier is now running his own Baltimore-based cooking concern, Kerfuffle Foods, which supplies vegetarian cuisine to the wholesale and catering trade, according to the company's website.
