Sports loyalty is based on the illusion of continuity through constant change. A team, like a river, never stays the same. Symbols remain. So pity the Washington Redskins, who will eventually succumb to national sensitivities and forsake the name Redskins, and to owner Jack Kent Cooke's deal-making and leave Washington. Should the club move to a race course on the banks of the Patuxent, the obvious name would be Colts, a label unhappily owned in the NFL by a rival in the Midwest and unavailable.

The TV repairman:MODERN DAY philosophers have been debating why or how the "Skins Game" ends up as the second highest-rated golf show on television for years (about two). To Curtis Strange, defending champ in the show scheduled for Nov. 25 (3:30 to 6 p.m. on ABC), the answer is simple: "The viewers want something different from time to time."Think back. Shell's Wonderful World of Golf was very popular. Then there was that match-play tournament CBS conducted for years."Joining Strange in the charge for $450,000 in prize money are Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus, "not a comedian in the bunch," reminds Curtis, "and we're going live this time.

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Payne Stewart put $220,000 worth o salve on an otherwise poor year yesterday by winning his second consecutive Skins Game in sudden death. In a format where opportunism is everything, Stewart made a 3-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole, worth $120,000, to edge Fred Couples, who already had won $210,000.On that hole, the 171-yard, par-3 17th at the Bighorn Golf Club, all four players hit excellent tee shots, with Tom Kite the farthest from the pin at eight feet and Stewart the closest at three feet.

The TV Repairman:It's ba-a-a-a-aaaaack! The 10th Skins Game, alias "Putting for Payola," plays ABC tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) and, during a conference **call the other day, a couple of the competitors were asked if it wouldn't be more exciting if they put up some of their own dough.U.S. Open champion Tom Kite was enthusiastic about the idea, saying, "It would be tough to get the players to agree on what to play for, but it would be exciting to see all the choking going on."Besides Kite, who says, "it would be nice to win, but probably the most important thing as far as pride is concerned is not getting shut out," defending champ Payne Stewart, Fred Couples and Greg Norman are aboard.

Talk about the weird world of sports television. Last weekend, the LPGA Championship, one of the "majors" on the women's golf tour, was being waged with NBC providing a couple of early afternoon snippets from Bethesda. The situation was made even more ridiculous on Sunday when the net requested the leaders be sent off in the dawn's early light so the winner could be determined by 1:30 p.m., thus allowing it to head off for an NBA playoff doubleheader.Tomorrow and Sunday, for a total of more than four hours and in the desired late afternoon slot, ABC is covering the JC Penney LPGA Skins Game.

There's no crying in baseball, but apparently there is cross-dressing in golf ... and it can be quite profitable. Former University of Maryland golf coach Fred Funk donned a flowered skirt for the third hole of the Skins Game on Saturday and undressed his three opponents on the way to a record-setting, $925,000 victory yesterday at the Trilogy Golf Club in La Quinta, Calif. He credited the strange wager he made with LPGA superstar Annika Sorenstam with keeping him relaxed enough to become the biggest single-event money-winner under the current Skins format.

Forget florals. Ditch the dots. Lose the leopard: Python is the pattern of the moment, and for good reason. Python looks feminine and strong. It's fun, flirty and modern, not to mention sexy, exotic and just a little dangerous. "You have to be brave to wear it," says Toni James, who has stocked her cozy, fashion-forward store, Katwalk, on East Read Street with python pants, skirts and jackets in tangerine, teal and fuchsia embossed leather by Oscar Leopold, Anja Flint and other designers.

In his short time in the restaurant business, Bill Leslie has learned this: His barbecued pork ribs don't stand a chance against the high-octane pigskin down the road. Each Sunday the Redskins play at their new 80,000-seat stadium in Prince George's County, Leslie loses 30 percent of his business because his regular customers won't fight football traffic.Yesterday, when the Ravens beat the Redskins 20-17, it was no different. The story was the same at Landover Mall, where full parking lots belie the nearly empty shops inside.
