Two horses whose connections had indicated to Pimlico officials they would run in the Preakness are now saying something else, but a Kentucky Derby runner has moved from a possible to a definite. Teuflesberg, who faded to 17th in the Derby on Saturday after challenging for the lead, is headed to Pimlico, trainer and co-owner Jamie Sanders said yesterday. "We think Pimlico is more suitable to his style," Sanders said. Lexington Stakes winner Slew's Tizzy has been dropped from consideration, according to trainer Greg Fox, instead opting for the Lone Star Derby.

The Maryland colt Tapit, who would have been one of the primary challengers to Smarty Jones in the Belmont, won't contest the final leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday at Belmont Park. David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds, Tapit's owner, said yesterday that the colt had not completely recovered from a lung infection that hampered him earlier this spring. Tapit last raced in the Kentucky Derby, finishing ninth. Michael Dickinson, who trains Tapit at his Tapeta Farm in Cecil County, could not be reached for comment.

Trainer Bob Baffert told Preakness officials yesterday that neither Maryland-bred Point Determined nor Bob and John will run in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday. That leaves the Preakness field holding at six entries: Barbaro, Sweetnorthernsaint, Brother Derek, Like Now, Bernardini and Hemingway's Key. Ah Day, the Tesio Stakes winner, is still a possibility, said trainer and part owner King Leatherbury, after he worked Ah Day yesterday morning. Ah Day traveled five furlongs in 59 seconds at Laurel Park.
