Washington -- I will sure be glad when the O.J. Simpson trial is over. Long before the opening statements it has become an extremely poisonous episode in a nation already bedeviled by racial polarization, distrust of police and the criminal-justice system, manipulations of juries, contempt for the media, and more.Early on I wrote that passions over an interracial marriage, anger over spousal abuse, debates over what sexual fidelity can be expected when a couple is separated, the celebrity of the defendant and the impact of limitless media coverage might make the trial almost as much a social calamity as the gruesome murders of Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

As expected, Judge Lance Ito has ruled that there is enough evidence against O. J. Simpson to require him to stand trial for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend, Ron Goldman. Jury selection is scheduled to begin next week.Actually the process is already under way. About 500 prospective jurors have returned questionnaires asking about their ability to serve on the case at least until February. About 1,000 prospective jurors are expected to be in the pool from which the 12 trial jurors and their alternates will be picked.

Do you really want to pay $29.95 for the O. J. interview? I mean, what is he going to say? I'm guessing a variation of, "I didn't do it." Far better to watch NBC tonight and hear the O. J. Simpson jurors say what they were thinking. Now, that should be interesting.* "Rock 'N' Roll Skating Championships" (8 p.m.-10 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- Tired of all those figure skaters gliding over the ice to the music of a bunch of dead composers? This may be your lucky night: Oksana Baiul is going to skip the ballet for once and skate to Aerosmith.
