Hubert Van Wyke "Bert" Simmons, who pitched and played outfield for the old Negro Leagues' Elite Giants and later became a Baltimore public school educator and mentor, died Wednesday after cancer surgery at Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital Center. The Woodlawn resident was 85. "I believe that Bert was the last surviving Elite Giant living in Maryland, and that was because he played in the team's later years," said Shawn M. Herne, chief curator of the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum and the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards.

When soccer clubs Chelsea and AC Milan come to Baltimore this month as part of the World Football Challenge, they'll be playing soccer inside M&T Bank Stadium on the best pitch that money can buy. The Ravens just have to ship the natural grass in from Virginia and install it before the two teams arrive. Even though the synthetic turf inside M&T Bank Stadium is considered to be among the best in the NFL, soccer at the highest level is almost always played on natural grass. So as part of the agreement to host the game, the Ravens have arranged to install temporary sod on top of their own turf for the July 24 game.

From her seat on the floor of the House of Delegates, a freshman lawmaker from Baltimore rose yesterday to address her colleagues, not as one of them but as a domestic violence victim opposing a measure that would have erased public records of some protective orders. Del. Cheryl D. Glenn, a 57-year-old Democrat, told lawmakers that her husband had horrifically beaten her years ago. She said abuse victims have plenty of reasons not to go to court. In her case, she said, her husband threatened to kill her children.
